Thanks Leila, this was very helpful. I hate shopping for health insurance cuz you’re right, they’re all garbage! It’s so frustrating that we have to pay so much for such crap coverage but it is what it is. Glad you’re in remission, Crohns is awful!

50% coinsurance after deductible..... You pay 100% of the bill until you hit your deductible, and then you pay 50% until you hit the out of pocket maximum

Thanks for making a video on this important topic. The Health Care Marketplace offered PPO plans up until a few years ago. Once my self-employment income exceeded the amount for me to qualify for a tax credit, I switched to a private PPO health insurance plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield. However, know that the price they originally quote you typically will not be the price they charge you once they review your records. Or at least that has been my experience. 😊 As already stated in comments, a HSA (healthcare spending account) plan is an excellent investment vehicle because money put into a HSA is tax-free going in and tax-free coming out.

I don't think individual PPO plans through BCBS are available in GA 😕 They used to be though. And unfortunately my plan doesn't offer an HSA!

I live in the UK where healthcare is free so I don't have health insurance, but used to when I lived in Ireland, however for some reason what the insurance covered was very limited. My dad was self employed as was my mum and they got this family plan, the cost depended on your age and existing medical conditions, it was very expensive though. In the UK I am grateful for the free healthcare here, although because it is free the waiting lists are long which is the downside.

I'm of the mind that if you're either really healthy or, on the other side of the spectrum, have high Healthcare costs, then a high deductible plan with an HSA is a good plan. You do pay our of pocket, though, so you need to figure out how your doctor's charge. My doctor charges me around $80 for a typical office visit, for example, through my plan. But the HSA is a fabulous investment vehicle and my employer currently helps fund my HSA in addition to having to pay much less than a standard PPO. Also, in my experience, vision insurance is not worth the cost.

I’m actually surprised it has you only paying $50 for primary visit but I guess yours is not considered a high deductible plan? I’ve had one in the past and the way it worked was you basically just pay the price for your appointments until you hit deductible amount. Then for yours you would pay 50% of the total. My primary care visits were around $190 for a basic appointment.

Yeah mine doesn't qualify for an HSA so I don't think it's technically consider a HDHP. So awful that you had to pay that much

That means you have to meet/pay your $7500 deductible before they’ll cover any portion of your ER visit. So if your ER visit is $8000, they’ll deduct your deductible of 7500 and pay 50% of the $500 remaining. We pay a fortune on our biweekly premiums and have a high deductible but at least we have an HSA. 😞 Years ago I worked at a major health insurance company and the plans for employees were terrible ironically. Then when Obama introduced his plan, they didn’t give us a raise bc they thought they were gonna lose money 🤦♀️ Its no wonder people were disgruntled there.

Get an HSA since you're now on a high deductible plan. Pay your deductible through there or just save/invest money there and pay out of pocket while keeping receipts for medical care in case you want to withdraw down the road. Triple tax savings and you deduct contributions from your yearly income which will help you maximize your premium tax credit. I'm 95% sure you probably know about this but just posting in case and for others!

American healthcare is shit but UK healthcare is dying so really I don’t think anyone is winning They’re supposed to be better systems in Europe I think then both of ours The UK will probably end up private. No one realises how many of us already have private dentists etc because you can’t get one on the NHS. You can’t get doctors appointments. Ambulances take hours to come for heart attacks etc. free doesn’t mean better. We are way underfunded.
