I gave birth 25 years ago.... and I was shocked at what happens after baby is born. Postpartum and menopause is something that should be discussed openly and honestly.

I agree! I had a C-section with my first baby (and second) but I was shocked about everything that happened with my body after the surgery. I just thought they took her (and everything gross) out via the large incision they made on my stomach and that was that. I was totally shocked when I found out that I would still bleed (massive amounts, and large other tissues) vaginally for weeks after. I didn’t know all the blood and tissue still had to come out naturally. It was so unexpected.

I had my first baby 40 years ago. I was completely unprepared. Back then, la- maz was popular, so I took a course in that. That was a complete waste of time, and I was so nieve. After a 24-hour, extremely painful labor, and 2 pushes, I had a healthy baby girl. Back then, we didn't know what sex the baby was. I wanted a sonogram to find out, but my old-fashioned dr said no. I threw up for 9 months and lost 50 lbs, and had extreme post partum depression. Everyone around me talked about how much they loved being pregnant, and I was miserable. I had an epidural with my second child ( boy). I had a different dr and went to a bigger hospital. I knew I was having a boy. That was a completely different and lovely experience. I'm so sorry you had so much trouble with your epidural. I hadn't thought about the possibility of a cerebro spinal leak. I'm going to have a total hip replacement next month, and they want to do the surgery using a spinal. Now I'm wondering if I want that option over general anesthesia. I'll be asking a lot of questions.

I’m 67 years old, when I was about 41 years old my period was late so I went to see my OB/GYN fearing I was pregnant, I had two teenage daughters and I didn’t want anymore children. The good news my doctor said you’re not pregnant but you are Perimenopausal! I said I never heard of Perimenopause before. The doctor said there’s Perimenopause, Menopause, and Post Menopause! I made a joke and we both laughed so hard! I try to talk to young women about our bodies. I went through it all at a young age.

God bless you Becky for sharing the real nitty gritty of post partum recovery. I'm 32 weeks pregnant and this is the first time I'm hearing about what to expect. I'm so emotional and angry that none of the women in my life, or at any time in my education, ever shared the reality of pregnancy/birth with me. I told my husband tonight that I feel like I didn't get to make an informed decision about if I wanted a baby or not because there is so much I didn't know I was consenting to. I'm not saying I would have chosen differently and I do want my baby, but my pregnancy would have been a lot less emotionally traumatic if I had known all this sooner. Thank you so much for giving me the heads up now so I can prepare myself for what's to come. I really am overwhelmingly grateful for your willingness to share your full story with us. Some people make Childbirth and postpartum sound way worse than it is. I have 6 kids, had complications with my last 2 pregnancies. The recovery wasn’t to bad. Depression is horrible tho. Just make sure you have a good support system. Your maternal instincts will kick in and follow what your gut tells you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and if you don’t get the answers you feel comfortable with, ask a different person. As a side note to first time pregnant people. I highly suggest allergy testing both the benzocaine and tucks pads on an arm prior to delivery. I had NO idea I was allergic to witch hazel until the day after I delivered my oldest. I felt great! Was up and around and feeling amazing and healing great. Annnnnd then the fires of hell lit up in my crotch, I was swollen and bright red and had hives ALLLL down there. The docs determined it was the witch hazel in the tucks pads. So it’s just a tip I pass on to all first time pregnant peoples.

I’m so sorry that happened. That definitely is a good idea to do and if someone did break out, it won’t be the hell on wheels of pain on top of the healing in the private area like u had to endure. ❤ I wished I was informed 13 years ago when I had my son that when a epidural was given that it was mixed with a heavy narcotic like Fentanyl or another substance with the lidocaine. Unfortunately my Dr was not on call and I had some other dr . My body literally rejects all pain medications especially narcotics and even OTC . I look and feel like someone withdrawing from addiction. I was bedridden for over two weeks. My mom had to take care of my son as I couldn’t move. (Father was useless) I would have opted to go natural or if there was alternative treatment that didn’t involve narcotics.

It’s important to give ourselves as well as others, grace. Your birth story isn’t what you planned, doesn’t make it any less beautiful. Mine wasn’t what I planned. I had every intention of a vaginal birth but my son was 2 weeks past his due date and it was discovered that I was also pre-eclampsia. We induced and after 15 hours of labor he was no where ready and becoming stressed. I went full blown eclampsia and was rushed into an emergency c-section. Minutes later I had a beautiful healthy son and as my mother, an RN happily told everyone- “It wasn’t the birth experience she wanted but he has the prettiest head I’ve ever seen on a newborn!” LoL There is always a bright side. He just turned 30 and over these many years I have hardly ever given his birth a second thought. Also, he still has a beautiful head.😉

Hi Becky. I think I have what could be seen as a "difficult story". I feel the urge to talk about what happened to me to other people for my sanity, even if I have regular checkups with a psychologist. But I was too afraid to tell my story, because I thought hearing my experience would just frighten other people. Seeing you be open and vulnerable about what happened to you allowed me to place myself as a recipient of a "difficult story". It made me realise how you telling your story and being vulnerable actually helped me feel relieved and compassionate, more than anxious. Thank you. I might share my story also, as I feel that it would help me, and who knows, maybe others.

An older lady had told me “it’s like a freight train going through you sideways!” I was petrified and no epidurals then, the doctor had to make an incision for me to deliver my son…he only weighed 5lbs 4 oz. But they did spray dermoplast on me every few hours and apply a heat lamp to my stitches and it felt so good and helped tremendously. I do understand how you felt and why. I think it is important that you do get personal and talk about your feelings, what was good and what was bad! 👍👍❤️🤗🤗

It’s so important to be honest about all the nitty gritty of pregnancy/labor/delivery/post partum. I appreciate your candor and your truths so much!! So many people either sugar coat it or scare the hell out of 1st time pregnant people. As a mom of 4 girls I tell it like it when asked. One of the (many) things that surprised me early on in my mom journey is that no one warns you that the post partum uterus cramping is SOOO much worse every subsequent pregnancy. With my first almost no cramps, very little discomfort, my second one was wow a surprise and with numbers 3 & 4 holy hell it SUCKED. (And #4 was an emergency C-section so on top of major traumatic surgery those cramps sucked bad).

Each birth story is unique. I've not been in a rush to shower after any of my births. A quiet, dark cave-like feel has been what calls me during labor as well, cozy and not jarring or overstimulating. Glad you were able to navigate the moment and make adjustments as you went thru it. My best postpartum tip is it's ok to say no visitors. And visitors are different than support people. There can be a lot of pressure on new moms of 'when can I come see the baby' - and there needs to be more awareness around the mom healing and maybe not wanting all the people/germs/questions. All that to say, it's ok to not have visitors right away. Let mama settle, let baby and new parents find some routines.

Depending on what type of BP meds you are on, many of them also contain a diuretic in them. That can definitely make urgency and frequency issues way more pronounced. Also your pelvic floor has gone through 10 months of trauma (weight of baby/ligament streaching/birth) it has to heal from, which usually presents as urinary issues. Just having a catheter can cause lingering urinary issues.

I love how laid back and honest you are in all your content. I moved to a menstrual cup and cloth pads when I was having a hard time tolerating everything. The pain/severity of my periods decreased dramatically once I transitioned away from disposables. I feel like I was reacting to tampons and disposable pads for a long time without realizing it - I never even knew that could be a possibility. I could never go back now. I used the diva cup until menopause and still use the cloth liners every day. I made my own (there were very few options to buy at the time) and was able to tweak the pattern and materials until I came up with my current style....it's layered flannel on the inside and fleece on the outside with plastic snaps on the wings. If period panties had been an option for me back then, I probably would have loved them. I think women need to hear more about the alternatives out there and find what works best for them.
