All through the journey, Maharaj was talking about attachment and kept saying it was not good to hold on to anything for long. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Maharaj reached the railway station at Kathgodam two hours prior to the departure time of the Agrafort train scheduled to leave at 4:30 pm. The Maas had packed some milk for Maharaj in a thermos flask, Ravi wanted Maharaj to have some milk but the milk had gone bad so Maharaj asked him to throw it away. Maharaj also told Ravi to throw the thermos as well. Ravi was a bit hesitant but Maharaj grabbed the thermos from his hands and threw it out the moving train, and repeated himself “it is not good to hold on to anything”.
Maharaj had been experiencing some pain in his chest for the past few days. He was going to Agra to get himself examined by a heart specialist, and his devotee in Agra. After consulting the heart specialist when he was returning back to Kathgodam, on the way back he got off at Mathura station and went and sat listlessly on the steps. Ravi checked on him and noticed his body turning cold. He immediately called for a taxi to take him to the hospital. Maharaj asked him to take him to Vridavan. When Maharaj was being taken to the Vridavan ashram he was almost in an unconscious state. He was trying to speak but no one could follow what he was trying to say. He was then rushed to the hospital. In the hospital the doctors checked on him, gave him injections and put him on an oxygen mask and his arm was cuffed to a blood pressure monitoring machine. Maharaj then got up and removed the blood pressure cuff from his arms and said “all this was of no use” . The doctors there said he is in a state of Diabetic coma. Maharaj feebly chanted “Jai Jagdish, Jai Jagdish, Jai Jagdish “ three times and slowly breathed his last. It was approximately 1:15am and the day was 11th September the day of anant chaudas when Maharaj became one with the divine. His body was brought to the ashram in Vridavan. Slowly the news about Maharaj leaving his body spread among the devotees. By morning, the ashram started filling up with the devotees. Different views were put forward about performing Maharajji’s last rites. It was being proposed by a few that Maharaj should be given Samadhi just like the sages and saints rightfully deserve, whether it be on earth (burial) or in water (submerging the body in water). But a well known saint of the Vrindavan ashram, Sant Leelanand Thakur aka “Pagal Baba” declared that Maharaj will be cremated in the ashram right at the sacred space for performing yagnas. In that space there was already a raised platform made of stones as though it was specially designed for Maharajji ‘s grand cremation. As the news spread people started reaching the ashram. People came from all over India and abroad. Siddhi Maa’s arrival was awaited to start the last rites for Maharaj. It was taking much too long for Siddhi Ma to get there so it was decided to go ahead with the cremation process. Just as the decision to proceed was made, everything immediately came to a standstill as the weather took a rough turn with heavy rain and thunderstorm halting the cremation process. Shortly, Siddhi Ma arrived there and the weather, too, settled to a calm, appearing as a deliberate intervention to delay the process till Siddhi Ma could get there. Maharajji’s funeral procession was taken in a vehicle heavily decorated with flowers and taken all over the town of Vridavan for people to get his final darshan and was then brought back to the ashram. At around 9 pm, Maharajji’s body was cremated. Next morning when flowers were being picked for Maharajji, his close devotee Kehar Singh too was there picking flowers for him in preparation for submerging Maharaji’s remains in places like Haridwar, Prayag etc. When Kehar Singh was picking flowers that morning, some people there remembered the occasion when Maharaj had said “Kehar Singh will pick flowers for my last rites”. This was being witnessed that day. Maharaj became one with the divine. But his grace and his impact has always remained with all the devotees. In Maharajji’s community of devotees, today, the number of devotees who are born after Maharjaji’s passing away outnumber the devotees who were there during Maharajji’s physical presence. There love and faith in Maharaj is no less. This is Maharaj’s leela , this is Maharaj’s miracle of love that his community of devotees is growing leaps and bounds even after he has left his body . The only difference being when Maharaj was physically present he would be in a particular place at any given time, today here and then tomorrow somewhere else, but now his presence can be felt everywhere. This is the miracle of a saint: it makes no difference whether he is physically present or not, for now he is everywhere, and with everyone.
