Do you struggle with knowing what the Lord wants you to do?
One problem is that we often wait until we are in a desperate situation to start seeking His voice. It’s hard to develop a hearing ear to God’s voice when your emotions are screaming at you!
Proverbs 3:5-6 might shine light on the subject:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
We need to develop a relationship of “trust” with the Lord and trust takes time to develop, doesn’t it? We certainly don’t start out at first “with all your heart,” now do we?
The good news is that He doesn’t expect you to, but He does expect us to start taking steps, baby steps at first, then regular steps, then leaps of faith.
It’s hard not to second guess the Lord’s voice when you first start hearing Him because He often goes against what YOU think you ought to do.
But Proverbs 3:5 says, “ lean not on your own understanding.” It takes time to trust and that’s a HUGE part of hearing the voice of God because our minds drown Him out or try to mute Him because He just doesn’t make sense to us. But remember, we’re talking about the Creator of the Universe here!
Verse 6 gives us another clue. “In all your ways acknowledge Him.” We need to invite the Lord along with us through our days. Of course, He’s already there because He’s omnipresent but we need to “practice His presence”.
Acknowledge Him all through the day, checking in, asking Him about every aspect of your life - and, yes, He’s interested in all the small things and He certainly has the bandwidth to handle all the details.
When we do acknowledge Him in all the details “ He shall direct your paths.” The Hebrew word translated “direct” here is
יְיַשֵּׁ֥ר yə·yaš·šêr
It means to make smooth, straight, right, easy or to direct or cause to walk uprightly.
I’m not going to tell you that life will be easy when you start trusting God rather than your own mind and feelings - at least not immediately. But things start straightening out in the long run and we start walking “uprightly” because we know we are being obedient and because we sense His presence and strength.
And we have confidence that we are walking in His path, that He is directing our steps, making it straight or plain to us. Perhaps it’s just the next step, not the whole path, but we know that we know that He has this and we trust Him.
