Poco was an American country rock band originally formed in 1968 after the demise of Buffalo Springfield. Guitarists Richie Furay and Jim Messina, former members of Buffalo Springfield, were joined by multi-instrumentalist Rusty Young, bassist Randy Meisner and drummer George Grantham.
To date, the band has released 19 studio albums, the most successful of which was 1978's Legend, which featured the Billboard Hot 100 #17 and Adult Contemporary #1 hit "Crazy Love". The band's last album was All Fired Up in 2013.
Poco are considered one of the founders of the Southern California country rock sound, and three of the members of the band have been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as members of other bands (Furay with Buffalo Springfield, Randy Meisner and Timothy B. Schmit with the Eagles). However, the band has yet to receive a nomination since entering eligibility in 1995. A lot more that could be said for these guys.
From 'Legend', the eleventh studio album by Poco, released in 1978. After spending eight weeks in the lower half of the Billboard 200 album chart, Legend was afforded a boost with the release in mid-January 1979 of the track "Crazy Love" as a single (I have a cover) which debuted at number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated 20 January 1979 and rose into the Top 40 within four weeks. Peaking at number 14 on the Billboard 200 dated April 7th, 1979, Legend would the next week be certified as a Gold record for sales of 500,000 units.
Legend would also generate a second Top 20 hit: "Heart of the Night", written and sung by Paul Cotton, meaning that Legend afforded both of Poco's veteran members a hit single, "Crazy Love" being written and sung by Rusty Young: the title track - another Rusty Young number - would prove a Hot 100 shortfall as a third single release.
Paul Cotton would describe "Heart of the Night" as a song which (Paul Cotton quote:) "kind of wrote itself...in twenty minutes", being "inspired by my love and lust for New Orleans", a city Cotton had previously focused on "Down in the Quarter" (album Head Over Heels/ 1975).
The cover art for Legend was done by Phil Hartman, the brother of Poco manager John Hartmann; Phil Hartman worked as a graphic designer creating album covers for his brother's clients (including America) while attempting to break out as a comic.
I had intent on playing this 'exactly' as I hear it but there are too many nuances for me to remember without more effort, so here you have 'close'. Hopefully the feel is there.
On this day in music history; 2007 - A new study revealed that rock stars were twice as likely to die early as the rest of us. Researchers said that the problem was so bad the industry should be labeled a 'high risk' profession. Happy to be a nobody.
2010 - Queen’s 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was voted the greatest ‘lighter in the air song of all time’ by lighter company Zippo. Led Zeppelin’s 'Stairway To Heaven', was voted in at No. 2 and Meat Loaf's ‘I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)’ was at No. 3 in the survey.
