When Lim Tze Peng found fame as an artist in the 2000s, he was already an octogenarian struggling from deteriorating eyesight and a weaker body. However, his visual artistry had continued to evolve tremendously in the period of 2000-2009, during which he achieved several aesthetic breakthroughs that would spur him on to even greater heights over the next decade. Researcher and Independent Curator, Tan Yong Jun unpacks Lim Tze Peng's legacy of works executed in the period between 2000 - 2009, illuminating for audience how Lim Tze Peng broke free from the constraints posed by his aging body to explore new working modes and subject matters that resulted in a new trajectory in his practice.
Born in 1921, Lim Tze Peng devoted himself to calligraphy and painting since young and became a full-time artist after retiring as the principal of Sin Min School in 1981. Since the 2000s, he has enjoyed critical and commercial success with his nostalgic ink compositions of Old Singapore landscapes and an innovative body of calligraphy work that defies centuries-old traditions of Chinese ink art. For his invaluable contribution to Singapore’s artistic heritage, he was conferred the Cultural Medallion by the Singapore government in 2003 and the Meritorious Service Medal in 2016.
Tan Yong Jun (MPhil in World History, University of Cambridge) authored the 2018 publication, 'Redefining the Archaic: The Art of Lim Tze Peng'. In this video narrative, Yong Jun builds on his existing research material on Lim Tze Peng to help create an informative narrative that relates the crucial milestones - significant events and stylistic transitions - in the artist’s oeuvre in the period of 2000-2009.
