This randomness especially bothers me in Arena which used to be my favorite mode and primary method of earning card packs. I never directly purchased them with gold, i would gamble everything away at Arena. But nowadays it seems that your draft and skill doesn't matter anymore. There is so much random card generation that it's silly. Half of the time you're losing to cards that weren't in the opponent's deck to begin with. Arena is a mode where you craft a deck from 30 random choices, so you don't have the resources to deal with insane shit like randomly generated Dragonqueen Alextrasza into 2 good 1-cost dragons. Your decent deck played by a decent player can go 0-3 now because of this crap. Want to be good at arena? You pick mage and draft any card that says 'Discover' on it. And hope for the best. Playing 10 discover cards in one arena game? No biggie! We used to hate 4-mana dr boom from unstable portal, but even that is nowhere near 2020 fuckery levels.

I found a good jumping-off point somewhere around Un'Goro; it was a boiling-up of several issues. Initially, I got into HS because it promised to be a CCG that actually let you have a competitive deck with cards that were readily-available. I loved that Basic cards like Fireball weren't tutorial filler junk that you were supposed to ditch once you bought/earned better cards, but were actually still valuable and usable. Over the years, I saw that the buff/nerf philosophy of HS was to remove Basic/Classic cards from the game in favor of pushing purchases to new cards; I was disheartened that the "nerf and buff cards to keep them interesting and playable" philosophy of the beta was replaced with "nerf cards in Basic/Classic and make them unplayable". This was largely why I gravitated to jank combo decks like Patron Warrior, Anyfin Paladin, and Caves Quest Rogue; rather than play the vanilla Curvestone game they were trying to push, it was like I got to defy the rules of the game that Team 5 was setting up. And we saw how all of those decks wound up. Ultimately, I fell off of the game around Un'Goro because the actual game was less decision-making and more "execute decks according to plan". I think it focused too much on mimicking Magic instead of going in its own direction and bringing interesting new decisions to the table. I also grew sour on the game as the dev team (and some top players like Kibler) endorsed a policy of strict set rotation instead of nerfing and buffing cards--something that is standard practice for most digital games. I don't want to get in a game just to have to keep walking the new expansion treadmill, and it seemed clear to me that Blizzard's balance was catered to Standard and not Wild.

I disagree a bit on the whole "Hearthstone has become Random". Hearthstone has always been random, looking back on effects like Ragnaros and Sylvanas, it wasn't exactly healthy either. But this is the kicker, it wasn't about how good the random effects were, even though sometimes they were backbreaking, it was about how well you could play around them. This is, in my opinion, what changed over time, as Randomness became such a central part of the game that you can't really play around it anymore. There are still "skillfull" decisions in Hearthstone, there are actually too many, to the point where the individual choices rarely feel like they matter, because every turn is a coin toss anyways.

It's the same phenomenon as in many other "mainstream" games. "Random" reduces the element of skill, which allows for new players to bridge the skill gap against veterans who know the game a lot better. This prevents scaring off new players who would otherwise rarely win any games. Unfortunately it also spoils the experience -- there's nothing worse than losing because of bad luck rather than because of your own mistakes.

You're assuming, in my opinion incorrectly, that this randomness is taken to such an extreme that the *majority* of games are decided by skill rather than luck. While it is true that a good game lets the less skilled player win *some* games against a more skilled player, the more skilled player should be - and is - favored to win the match.
@shieldphaser
4 жыл бұрын
@@scrotiemcb5858 No, I'm not assuming that the randomness is taken to that extreme. Nowhere does it say that in my post -- that is your own projection. Being favored isn't the crux of the matter either. It's the same as in XCOM where your recruit misses a 95% point-blank shot. You lose because of randomness rather than because of your skill, and that plain isn't fun. You should win or lose on your own merits, not because of some virtual coinflip.

@@shieldphaser I admit I haven't played XCOM, but I assume it's a single player game. If so, no, it's not comparable; the computer doesn't need motivation to continue against a more skilled opponent. @@shieldphaser Take some math classes, “random” in XCOM is so much different than random in Hearthstone. The % mechanic in XCOM is the average, meaning not every 95% will hit and not every 95% shot should hit, that’s like saying it’s a 100% shot. I guarantee you if you counted up all the shots in an XCOM campaign, you would see that the game is in fact, not working against you and so your statement that “you lose because of randomness” is totally false in XCOM’s case. I would even argue that the % mechanic is very good for the game as it makes it more interesting. You need to consider what is gonna be your plan B if the shot you take fails. That actually makes the game even more skill-expressive. Sure it leads to some frustrating moments, but in most cases it’s only frustrating if you don’t know what you are doing. Take that from a guy who finished multiple campaigns on Commander/Ironman both with and without DLCs, including some campaigns where I didn’t even lose a single soldier.
@shieldphaser

@@theancientone1616 This is completely missing the point. If anything, XCOM cheats for you with the randomness on lower difficulties. That doesn't change the fact that losing because you missed three 90% shots in a row is very frustrating, which recently happened to me in long war (where the game doesn't cheat for you). I genuinely think that the game would be better if anything above 80% just snapped to 100% and anything below 20% just snapped to 0%. It would make the outliers less frustrating and prominent.

That's kind of the thing with high power sets. You'll mostly see either aggro or combo. Although I will have to hand it to Blizzard. They actually printed decent cards this time around instead of having boring unplayable junk like in previous high power sets.

Personally I stopped playing back in 2019 just after the hong kong drama. That didn't actually have any impact on me personally quitting the game, it's just in the right time frame. No, I quit because the price of new cards and expansions was ludicrously expensive, new expansions made old decks invalidated and the awkward rotation made sure that there would only be one viable deck for each class in standard, if even that, all while wild was ignored by blizzard. But I think the biggest reason was that a better alternative for me as a player came out in Legends of Runeterra.
@omarsameh5007

game died when they separated wild and standard cuz it means they will just keep printing same cards each 3 months cuz imagine X class loss his board clear they need replacement each 3 expansion and thus makes wild mode insanely op broken decks that get snowballed and get feeding over time and dev refuse to balance wild cuz its no longer main mode and doesn't make them money compare to standard as for standard you just buy same card with different art style each 3 month that does same thing cuz old version of it now in wild mode , also making expansion only and not rotation of 1 expansion 1 adventure means casual won't be able to catch up cuz developer bad greeds of activision blizzard and developers also to blame they work for this scummy company and all they care their pay checks and not quality of the game

Most of top tier decks in wild are aggro or mid range. Just a few control decks are competitive. Also there are just o small amount of RNG in competitive wild decks. I wold say that is close to the right amount of RNG it should have. Wild is the closest Hearthstone come to be a good card game.

Same here. Played around 200 hours of hearthstone back in 2016 and then kinda dropped it. Now got into LoR when the beta came out and a few weeks ago revisited Hearhtstone and it's so bad. Like, everything about it is just terrible. And yes, collecting cards is so much easier in LoR.

I play LoR since Mobile release on March 2020. I have around 80% of the cards without investing any money. You receive cards just by playing. There is a weekly chest with a lot of cards. You have region paths to get more rewards as you play and get cards of the given region. Even there are legendary rewards where you get a legendary card for sure. The arena LoR gives you a legendary even don't win any battle.

Despite myself loving multiple cards from future expansions (including DKs), I have to agree and say exactly there was a great place for the game. KFT made Big priest and OTK priest much better, put UI and Spreading Plague in, and DMH warlock for infinite armor. I mained control priest/warlock/druid, so I like those cards, but for different reasons. I see completely how they're bad for the game.

I hate with a burning passion the direction they gave this game. I loved every bit of it up to sometime around Kobolds and Catacombs. At that point I felt they started putting in way too many random effects. Discover is a mechanic I dislike *so fucking much*. The fun part for me was thinking 2-3 turns ahead and planning my turns strategically according to what I could predict my opponents would play. Can't do much of that if their entire hand is full of random cards with high variance random effects. I haven't played Hearthstone in 1 year now (since the Blitzchung incident), and I know for a fact I made the right decision. This game is a trap built to keep you hooked. If anyone is on the fence about quitting: leave ASAP. You won't regret it, trust me. This game is simply not worth your time or money. Fuck Hearthstone.

I'm sure I'll be the only one to say this, but the random effects do create less static gameplay. Curvestone can be boring and repetitive with the only question being who misses their x-drop determining who wins the game. Random effects create more diverse outcomes even they are frustrating and absurd at times.

I like this video, however I think it would have been better had you made two videos. One to discuss the problem of randomness and how discovering rng that didn't start in your decks make the game less predictable and less skill based, and an entirely separate, second video discussing the classes, their history and archetypes. I think those are very different topics that mashed together awkwardly in this one video and it diluted the focus. Just a small critique, but great content overall.

I haven't played the game for quite some time now. I remember getting frustrated with "random" effects back then. I think big priest (with 4 mana barnes), ice block and jade idol were why I stopped playing honestly. I also remember getting pretty frustrated with aggro shaman when it was in it's prime. Edit: Also my favourite archetype, miracle rogue, which was so satisfying got increasingly nerfed. Also with new cards/power creep it kind of just fell off.

I miss the old days because they had interesting single player content. it was like a puzzle to solve then you get rewarded with a specific card that is themed around that adventure and can only be acquired from that adventure. nowadays you either get randomly generated bosses that you fight with randomly generated cards, or you fight the lich king and get your ass handed to you for a pack of random cards. I still don't have Arthas hero portrait because he keeps beating my ass as paladin.

Random isn't too bad as long as it is predictably random. Things should be consistently good with a _small_ chance for a big upside or downside. Things start to feel really bad when the variance gets too high. I think the random card generation in hearthstone makes things interesting since you have to think about things probabalistically.

I was not feeling the game for a while, only kept playing it because it's how me and friend stayed in contact. But with how Hearthstone handled the Hong Kong protests it was enough to make me uninstall it and never look back. I sometimes miss having a decently competitive fun game to play on the side, but am always reminded that it was more frustrating to play than anything else. Played since beta and probably put close to $1,000 in the game.

What made me stop playing 2 months ago, was just that everything in wild is just waaaay too broken and you can't win against meta decks (which you encounter most of the time unless you have a hella low rank or managed to grind all the way up to legend (and drop down into ranks where people don't play meta decks) with boring decks against boring decks). So I just got tilted and had less and less fun. Might return to the game though.

I'm still hoping for a mod like "Starcraft 2 Arcade" in which the community can create their own game mods of Hearthstone. I understand that this can be a very pricey undertaking for the studio to implement such a feature, but as you can see with "SC2 Arcade", there is a way to monetize mods which makes money for Blizzard and the community. The history also shows that those mods turned into some of the most successful games of all time (DOTA2, Auto-Chess, Counter Strike, DayZ, PUBG, ...).
