I saw in the Unica video that you also have the Synesso ES1like this with you. Can you tell me from your point of view which of the two machines are best for you? Does the pressure profiling of the Unica make it almost unique? How do you feel about the two displays? Does it make a big difference that the Synesso has two different temperature tanks? Where do you think there are more adjustment options and therefore more potential for further recipes later. Does the Synesso also have the option of getting updates via USB and so on? I'm surprised to see a gicleur in a machine with active flow control. Do you have a sense of why Synesso has put the gicleur in there at all? Does it play an important role in a machine like this? The way the machine seems to be laid out, pressure control and measurement are located in the manifold on one side of the gicleur, and the group head is on located the other side. With the gicleur in between, there will be a pressure drop across it that's proportional to flow rate, so at low flow rates, the pressure in the group head will be very close to the target, but at higher flow rates the indicated pressure will be higher than what's seen at the group head. I think this is why you saw 7 bar pressure indicated, but no pressure measured at the group head when it was wide open.
@LanceHedrick
3 ай бұрын
But, I've had other machines with gicleurs that accurately read backpressure. Likely due to measurements being taken from beyond the gicleur. Not sure why I didn't think of the fact pressure is taken before hand
@quantitativecafe
3 ай бұрын
@@LanceHedrick I think you answered the "why" in the last 10 minutes of the video as well. With pressure control, flow rate is determined by resistance in the water path, so when there's no puck resistance, you'll see very high flow rate--i.e., high water debit. If Synesso sees this as an issue, adding a gicleur "solves" the problem, but it also means pressure control won't be accurate at high flow rates. For someone who doesn't mind high water debit and wants accurate pressure control for fast-flowing shots, removing the gicleur would probably be a good option.

The argument for boilerless machines is to use the freshest water possible for taste, etc. While in principle that may be right, is this a problem that doesn't actually exist? As in, if we compare coffee brewed with fresh water versus fresh water reboiled several times in a boiler (so negligible changes in mineral content or gases), could we actually discern differences in taste? I think not... perhaps test this hypothesis in a blind study?
@potkettle
