If the heat pump does not produce enough heat, it reverts to electric resistance heating to boost. Well, the only person I knew who had heat pumps installed was my ex boss. The radiators barely got above 45°C, so the house needed really good insulation. One winter his garden where they ran the lines froze into a block, killing the grass and some plants or trees, don't remember. He also said the pump could be heard at night and would drive him crazy trying to get to sleep, putting on headphones and listening to music, because apparently you can't shut it off otherwise something bad happens or it takes forever to heat back up. Also, the heat pumps have a secondary form of heating, not just the reverse AC style loop, but also an element heater which kicks in if there isn't enough heat available to suck out of the ground outside. That plus the compressor doing it's thing pumping gas around the loop, and the second pump pumping water around the radiators, his electricity bill became so insanity ridiculous, that a man who I would deem to be very wealthy, sold his big BMW and got a four cylinder one, and would be telling his wife and son to turn off the lights where they weren't needed. Considering how many times my boiler has gone down (only original parts left are the case, back, burner and the primary heat exchanger, I kid you not), I think heat pumps are best left to office blocks and big social housing projects. The only people who can afford the running costs are big businesses and those who get everything paid for by the government.

So my friend, have you considered that if everyone in your local area is running a heat pump in winter, the ambient temperature of the localised air would consequently drop, thus requiring more energy to run your heat pump to extract heat from the available outside air . Only worth a heat pump if you can comfortably heat your home on 50'c boiler setting. If you can't keep the home at a cosy temp with that in winter then heat pump won't be up to the job.

I don’t think people mean they don’t work in winter I think it’s that they use electricity to heat when it’s cold, so your heat pump is running how much juice is it pulling ?

What about the coefficient of performance at these external temperatures? My guess would be about 2. In other words you need to use 1kW of expensive electricity to generate 2kW of useable heat in the house. That’s going to be jaw dropingly expensive over the winter months when gas even at current exorbitant prices is a fraction of the cost of electricity. Been installing heat pumps under duress for many years and they simply do not work in the UK climate.

I pay the same amount for electricity and gas 😂
@iainmacleod4007
Жыл бұрын
@@AllenHart999 I very much doubt that. Typically electricity in the UK works out at around 35p per kW and the most expensive gas tariffs for domestic properties are 10p per kW. Heat pumps consume vast amounts of electricity in the current weather just to prevent the condenser from turning into a block of ice. They are at their most inefficient just when you need the heat. Also to prevent legionaries disease you must keep your domestic hot water at between 55 degrees and 60 degrees Celsius. You cannot with any current heat pump technology achieve this without supplementing the dhw temperature using an electric immersion element summer or winter. They don’t work ( I speak from experience) unless it’s around 20 degrees outside and even if they did there is nothing like the spare generating capacity in the national grid to make this fools paradise work for all. Can you imagine what would happen in winter if every house in the street started pulling 10kW of electricity off the grid to produce around 25kW of heat. Melt down would be the result.

They absolutely do work in the UK climate. Ours was running quite happily at -10c the other week. They use recirculated hot water for the defrost cycles by reversing the flow.

@@cleckie the COP under the conditions you describe would at best be 1.5. At that efficiency it is cheaper to buy some oil fired radiators and plug into a socket. I have been involved with many hundreds over the years both in social housing and commercial buildings, all makes and models. Not one has ever been a success. Most of today was spent trying to fix a commercial Daikin unit in a large NHS facility with limited success. Frankly they are useless.

Heat pumps work till negative degrees. The problem is the efficiency falls as the temp goes below 40f and they begin to need more and more electricity especially when the heat strips turn on.

Gas boilers work in winter too - they are cheaper to run and far easier to repair if anything goes wrong - with heat pumps you need a room fitted out like something off NASA - How much did this cost to supply and fit compared to a boiler ?

I like how many idiots keep saying that the heat pumps don't work or are expensive ... please please choose a company that can do full assessments and design full sistems . May be more expensive but the difference will be huge. Biggest mistake people do is not having insulation, installing them in places whitout air circulation, not integrating them properly with existing sistems and simply using the wrong. A good company will tell you if it can be installed and the requirements for proper optimal function

There are different kinds. ASHP have a wall mounted unit inside that blows hot or cold air in to heat or cool. You can have air - to water ones to replace water boilers. If you have electric radiators you can just leave them unused when you have a ashp heat pump.

They will work with most houses here in the UK but they will be highly inefficient resulting in catastrophic energy bills and people branding them “piece of sh*t” and unfit for purpose. The reason behind it is the way houses are build over here with lack of internal and external insulation plus radiators as the main heating element in every room. The radiators will obviously need to be heated to higher temperature to see any effects therefore the heat pump works at higher temperatures = more energy consumption. I have a house aboard build in 2020 (Porotherm)30cm clay bricks + 20 cm external insulation, underfloor heating throughout the entire property and Panasonic 9kW heat pup installed and set up properly. My annual bill for 2022 received in January 2023 for heating, hot water and entire electricity was £800 and I don’t get any solar energy from panels. Temperature in the house is always 23 degrees throughout the year, even with a few days at -20 outside and temperature averaging in December at -5. The set up must be right first to even think about installing the heat pumps. And yes, selling them to poorly insulated houses making it very inefficient therefore a big SCAM.
