Larry, So wonderful to see you back on here again. KZitem is NOT sending notifications to me when you upload. I ran across this one in a search. Glad I found it. Looking forward to part 3 as well. Hope you had a terrific time on your vacation.

Well that was great that you got him to send you the cross referenced part numbers. This HW 101 I bought on EBAY Last year I have was like a Horse rode hard and put away wet. It has serious problems in the circuit board. I doubt I could ever repair it. I like how you check it board by board as well. Thanks for a great video.

Thanks “Double L”! Heaths are fun and frustrating to work on…..a lot has to do who has built it and especially “WORKED” on it…lol….the resistance checks on each board is a great place to start…fortunately there are cannibalized sets out there to still get extra boards. Im trying to find one of the heath alignment tools part # 490-1….which circuit board are you having a problem with? Maybe we can make a contact on 20 meters with these “beasts” and record it on youtube? Thanks for watching…Take Care-Larry

Great vid Larry. My HW101 and PSU came out of a dumpster of all places! I'm really looking forward to part 3 of this series. I'd like to ask you to put some parts sources in the info list for folks like me who will be repairing/ rebuilding/ restoring these fine classics. The one thing I didn't find during my dumpster rescue was the power cable. Hopefully there's a source of NOS or repro cables. Just love those silicone belts. Thanks de N5SOQ

As far as resources, I just do searches and find parts on ebay, Antique Radio forums, etc. Here is a power cable kit you cn get and build…..www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-11-PIN-CABLE-FOR-HEATHKIT-SB-101-HW-101-TRANSCEIVERS-FREE-DEL-/151066762504 Part 3, well, not much to it….in fact Ive been talking on the radio for a couple of months….I probably will pull the VFO apart….after I just cleaned and put the Kenwood 520 back on the air, I realized the Heath VFO probably needs cleaning and lubricating…..keep me updated on ur progress with ur HW101…..Take Care-Larry

Great series, I am restoring a HP-23 and HW-100. Here's a question for you and fellow followers. My HW-100 has both CW and SSB filters installed with the proper linkage and lever knob. I can not find that the extra filter was an option. The front panel does NOT have the silk screening of the SSB and CW positions on it. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks
@Backtothefutureradios

Thanks Jim! The HW 100 I have seen didn’t have the lever or the silk screen…..I’m not that familiar with the 100, I will take a look at the manual and see how it was built…..I’m wondering if someone did some surgery and added the lever?? Let us know if you find out the answer to ur question….Take Care-Larry W4PJP

Jim, comparing the schematics of the 100 vs the 101……look between V2 and V3…the 100 only shows FL1 inline without switching…..the101 utilizes a switch to toggle between the cw or ssb filter( the cw filter SBA-301-2 see note in ur manual on pg 137)…I believe a switch and filters have been transplanted in it HW100….73 Larry

Hi Carl….Thx for watching and commenting….my problem was not all that glamorous….lol….I had my mic wired incorrectly😬….A quick way to test the VOX circuits, V17A and V12B, is to switch to CW mode and press the CW key. If the HW-101 switches to transmit then V17A and V12B are working. The VOX SENSITIVITY control is not used in CW mode and the FUNCTION switch does not need to be set to VOX.

@@Backtothefutureradios Thanks for your input. Mine does not key into transmit in CW mode. And it is now oscillating all the time audio. I think it has something to do with the side tone. Very loud and in all modes now. Here goes the rest of my hair!

Good morning, I need to know if one of these Chinese frequency meters could be installed. to be able to see the frequency of work in the contacts. I leave displaced and I need to adjust it well in the qso. thanks in advance.. EA7JZM
@Backtothefutureradios

Good morning! I believe you are asking about a frequency readout. A standard frequency counter will not read the frequency out directly. The frequencies are mixed in the radio for the final output frequency. I believe you are talking about the VFO drifting during the QSO. I have to adjust my VFO several times unless I have had the rig on for a while. The drift is caused by components values changing due to different temperatures. I hope this helps! 73 Larry

Mark, hopefully you have a little history on the rig? Know the person that sold it etc. if not, I would not connect power supply to the rig, but bring the PS up on a variac slowly, watching the current draw as it is brought up. If no variac, use a dim bulb tester. If you are not sure about that, do some searches on youtube. Basically, its an incandescent light bulb wired in series with the power cord. The bulb acts as a current limiting resistor. If the PS is shorted, the light bulb will be bright immediately and not dim. If the PS isnt shorted, the bulb will light brightly and immediately dim. If you get this far, check all the voltages on the PS, which will read high because they are not under load. If the PS is original, I would replace the capacitors, they are 40 plus years old. If comfortable with the PS, connect it to the rig and bring the voltage up on the variac (highly recommended) or use the dim bulb. Let me know how it turns out. Please research using the dim bulb if you havent used one before, hopefully you have or know someone with a variac. However, some Hams, just plug them in and hope its good….(Not recommended)….Take Care-Larry

How did you determine the ground side of the poly capacitors?
@Backtothefutureradios

Hi Sam! I take an oscilloscope and put the leads of the scope on each lead of the cap while holding the cap in between my fingers and see the AC voltage my body induces into the cap….I reverse the scope leads and whichever lead gives the highest induced voltage is the ground side….the opposite of the oscope ground lead….there are several videos on KZitem on this method….Hope this helps!
