I bought and built one of these when l was a teenager in the mid seventies. Saved for it with my paper route money. I still remember the excitement of opening the box. These were great radios, definitely different times.

Nice job! The HW-101 is a true classic. I whish I could have experienced HAM Radio back in the era of the Heathkit days. 73!

I just bought one of these for $100 with power supply, and plan to give it a complete photo inspection, cleaning and replacing items as needed, and a use this radio to brush up on my electronics schooling from 30 years ago I have never really used. I have the original assembly manual, and you have many good tips for things for me to check on before powering it up. Nice.

Nice job! "Hot Water 101" Very cool - you made a contact! I like that you are using CW too - I was waiting to hear an answer to your CW CQ call..... I may have to my HW101 out of the box in the basement. Let's see...it was working...10 years ago...(wow- has it been that long?) Thanks for the memories!

O rings make good replacement belts for the Hot Water 101s. That is what I used on mine. I bought a couple of Kenwoods & use those more often. I think the 580 or the 480 has the built in antenna tuner so I can run 80 meters with a 40 meter antenna. The HW had 6146B tubes in it and those don't like to neutralize unless you make some changes to the bias and the load, so a pair of new old stock very late production RCAs went in last night. 60-65 Watts on the Bird. Nice, from a better era in ham radio. Certainly more enjoyable, if not more hands on operating. KD2JSS

I have one I'm trying to get running. Lots of static, a few faint CW signals. KE8KNX 73

The crackling in the background almost sounds like SMD (Silver Mica Disease in the IF cans) and not so much from atmospheric QRN
