I wasn’t going to post anything until I posted the VFO first look.. but it’s taking forever to transcode. About 9 hours. Just to remove the thump in the beginning. Lol. I got bored.. and remembered a viewer’s comment the other day. So I decided to take a look with you at the PCB in an HW-8 and give you my thoughts on restoring one of these gems. I’ll be posting the HG-10 VFO vid in a few hours when it’s done transcoding.
I always forget things.. and in this case it’s the band switches. Pushbutton ones. Heathkit liked them a lot. I do not. But they MUST be cleaned.. preferably with a de-oxidation product like De-Oxit D5, but I’m too cheap to pay for that. I just go with Naptha. Actually, I use my own switch lube, a contact wash made of Naptha and machine oil. It will do a bit of light de-oxidation, but I tend to do that manually, mechanically, with swabs if it’s needed on wafer switches. These switch contacts are not accessible though- so I just go with a spritz of my Naptha blend or use straight 97% or 99% isopropyl alcohol.
I should talk about my work bench chemicals. Might surprise you how few I use. But please do not use ordinary 70% 'rubbing' alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol. it contains FAR too much water- and in a closed switch environment, that water can stay there a long time. The flash point of water is way too high. And it's surface tension far, far too strong to be an effective contact cleaner.
