Great video John! Just picked up a HW-8 at the Yuma Hamfest this past weekend. It is museum quality in and out and completely unmodified and one of the best assembly jobs I have ever seen. The builder even cleaned the flux off the back of the board. Serial # of 98xx. Fired it up and works great on all bands. Planning on doing these mods and a few more without changing the appearance. Downloaded the schematic and pieced it together and could not see any signal path for the s meter to work in receive. Then discovered it wasn't there. Planning on doing that simple mod also. 73

FB and well done, John. Glad your mods are reversible. There's a finite number of HW-8's left in the world. I may or may not mod my HW-8 since it has a broken band switch and will not hold on 15M. Other than that it's a fun little CW rig. Works pretty well as-is with high-z headphones and a mechanical key. vy 72 zut de n6mgn

Nice to see you back John. I just got a hw-7 at a local ham fair. It is all original with no mods that i can see. It works as it is. I plan on tinkering with it to do some of the mods that improve it.

Sandy, I've got a few more mods in store for the little rig. It's been a lot of fun making contacts. Made a couple just today. ~John

Great little fun rigs. Having lots of fun with mine. Added a separate active receive antenna to reduce local noise. So much better!

Excellent John. My first ham lit was the HW7. Later I got the HW8 and put in mods for RIT and Full Break-in. Many hours of fun working DX in Diego Garcia as VQ9CM. My antenna was a spider with a few radial saturated with salt water. Enjoyed the video and look for more of your videos! Chuck WB9ZDS

Excellent idea with the strip LED's. Normally I use several 3mm LED's between the 2 chassis plates but you need to be careful to not short to the chassis. This looks much easier and cleaner! 73 John kc9on
