Public schools in Manila will stay shut till Tuesday after temperatures crossed 40 degrees celsius. Several private schools have also moved to online classes.
Even on days when the temperature recorded is below 40 degrees, it feels like 43-45 degrees celsius with humidity.
Most schools are not air-conditioned and there have been complaints of children fainting last week.
The crippling heatwave will also increase the pressure on the powergrid. 13 power stations shut last week, increasing pressure on Luzon where reserves are depleting.
The weather agency has warning Filipinos to take precautions as prolonged exposure to the heat can cause heat strokes
State weather forecaster Glaiza Escullar has predicted the heat index could continue hitting record highs until the second week of May.
There's another worry that the heat is adding to. A surge of dengue fever cases have been reported ...with cases rising to 35,000 last month from 15,000 for the same period last year.
It's not just residents of Manila, even passengers at Manila's main airport struggled with temperatures inside the Terminal 3 building after two of its six cooling towers stopped working on Sunday.
