@barbcoleman7681

My husband uses a one and done approach. He began training at 14, he is 36 now. When he first began he used multiple sets per exercise and always used good form. Unfortunately, when he was 19 he hurt his lower spine on a leg press machine. A few years later he began to change his technique, focusing more on using full range of motion with a slow and controlled movement. When he would barbell squat, he was just 5'6 and 167 pounds, he would use such strict form athletes and bodybuilders would tell him they rarely see such strict form used. He only would squat 225 for one all out set of 18-20 repetitions and then go to the leg extensions afterward without rest and do 80 pounds for 15 repetitions. Sometimes on the barbell squat he would pause at parallel for 2 solid seconds on every rep he performed. He would get 15 reps when he did this. He said, true strength is your isometric strength combined with a full range of motion using a controlled pace, unless you are a powerlifter or strongman.

Awesome. O'Hearn is getting stronger. love it. As a body builder I couldn't agree more with his knowledge. I tried for years doing "good form" and reps 8-12 till failure. Did very little. Now I mix it up and always go heavy 3 reps to max with a spotter and muscle mass and strength went up. Must of us will not grow with lighter weights and high reps like Heath, Flex, Dillet. Doing what he's doing at his age in terms of muscle, strength, and just overall intelligence and ability is incredible. More impressive that Larry Wheels to me for sure. He's far older than Larry, and Larry is barely lifting more than Mike. Mike may be stronger on Incline now than Larry is. I hate to compare guys like that, but it's a testament to how impressive Mike is. Appreciate your videos Mike. I'm working very hard too, and i'm coming for you lol. with all due respect to mike, im in my 40's and have exp a bit of a renaissance in my weightlifting by forgetting about going to failure...but focusing on "power" with sub max weights. I will still do singles with ~90%, but only 3 sets. I have a speed measuring device and i just don't lift weights anymore that don't come up at a certain min velocity. If i fall below that velocity, im out...i move on to another excercise or just call it a day on that muscle group period. He is right though, those reps where your elbows are starting to slide around.....i should have "never" done that kind of lifting. TBH Mike's velocity on some of these reps looks "very" good. I was surprised to hear him talk about not lifting explosively because it looked to me like he has worked with such a device. Dude keeps his speed up and doesn't touch failure. Failure fries your CNS.
@billj4525
2 жыл бұрын
It does. I used to lift to failure a lot and you get overtrained pretty easily. Took a while to recover after pushing myself day after day with high volume routines and sets to failure every workout. My body hurt and my hands were shaking and muscles were twitching even when not working out. I took like month off an just did some light lifting to recover and came back feeling great. I just get so into it sometimes I push too hard, but im listening to mike when it comes to longevity now because I want to lift forever without any serious injuries, and I have been lucky so far, not to mention it's more beneficial for gains in strength for sure , and I just enjoy lifting a lot in general. I feel like Mikes reps are more bodybuilding reps usually and not super explosive the way say Larry wheels benches. I think Mike would be even stronger if he did all his reps super explosive like Larry. Mike does have explosion there don't get me wrong, but I don't think his reps are geared towards that.

Having a proper diet makes the world a difference. When you train with such crazy volume and failure though, you definitely need a few days off. Lol you can't be working out 5-6 days a week if you're going to failure every time on each muscle group. I tried that and couldn't, I was burnt out. @@garymac5571 Yeah, genetics can make a persons face look young too. How young someone looks in their and body and face doesn't mean they're ageing good or slower than average though, that's the thing. HGH especially isn't good for longevity in the long term anyway.

Mike - singles up to a top set of 3, then 2 sets of db inclines for reps of 10-12. Do you see any benefit from doing the incline barbell for down sets at higher reps? I'm 58 and in the same preservation mode to stay healthy and keep lifting in the future.

He uses barbell exercises for lower rep ranges because they are safer and easier to load. Dumbbells for hypertrophy stuff.

Really solid advice , i also realized it’s important to lift the least amount of weight possible with true good form, lifting becomes an art when u truly master that

If you look close, the entire gym uses ivanko barbell company weights while this incline bench rack uses american barbell company weights. Even if this is half the weight of what it actually is, a 275 incline bench in your 50’s is a great lift.
