It is unbelievable that more sports writers picked Patterson than Liston in the first fight. Cassius Clay correctly predicted a Liston KO win..

Nice to see you got into the 1960's I'm glad it's out Liston apparently was actually born in 1922 (Howard Cosell Found Liston's ID revealing he was 10 years older then claimed)

SONNY LISTON'S REIGN UP TO THIS POINT SHOULD'VE AT LEAST BEEN 3 YRS....

Should've been alot longer than that if he had gotten a title shot sooner.

It says something about Floyd's lack of confidence that he felt the need to take that disguise (including a false beard) along to the fight.

Floyd patterson was shook. He should have never taken that 2nd fight. He knew in his heart he had no chance. Maybe it was a money move.

Just take a look at the top 10. With the exception of Eddie Machen, Ali has fought them all. Liston, Patterson and Chuvalo twice. Now that's how you become the greatest - by fighting the best.

Ali was never a duck, he even regret fighting shavers so late in his carreer as he wish he would have found out sooner that shaver is the real deal However, after the shavers fight, he told in an interview that the next fight he will start be selective as he cant perform or take risky challenge anymore He challenge leon and lost

Good point about Sonny Liston not being FOTY for '63. The American media,particularly the boxing media, had a real agenda against Sonny at the time.He was never going to win that coveted award.

And the same bias was soon to rise against Clay in 1964. Real damn shame.

Cassius Clay really did not look too impressive in his two fights before his title shot. But he would soon mature into a different fighter and make history with perhaps the most impressive 9 heavyweight title defenses ever.
@hungrysurfer9471

That might have been to put pressure on Listons people to make the fight quick in case clay looses to someone soon.

@@hungrysurfer9471 I don't think that was the case. Sonny would fight whoever the member 1 contender was. If Clay had looked more impressive leading up to the fight it would have generated more interest and money. But at 8 to 1 odds it was figured to be an easy win for the champ. The only reason for any interest at all was all of the talking and antics by Clay. Two things come to my mind. First Clay/Ali usually trained harder for his best opponents. And he just hadn't fully matured yet in 1963. Even in 64 he was not quite the fighter he would become in 65-67. Unlike a lot of people I had Clay winning the Jones fight by a couple of rounds. It was a very tough fight though. If he hadn't been clowning around against Cooper he would not have got put on his ass by a perfect left hook. I know there is controversy about what happened in the corner between rounds. I believe Dundee cut his glove myself. I can not say how much difference it would have made neither can anyone else. He did beat Cooper again a couple years later though. But just looking at Clay's fights in 63 must have had Sonny thinking this would be very easy. By 1964 Sonny was well past his prime but he also entered the fight Miami out of shape.

@@hungrysurfer9471Clay should've fought another opponent to restore some credibility before meeting Liston maybe Ingo or Mildenberger

@@Ken_Frazer-619 Thats not the point. If he had fought another boxer and looked good, then Liston mafia bosses might have ducked Clay. He needed a poor weak performance to get the Liston fight... Holyfield looked old and Shot with Bobby Cruz just before Mike Tyson in 96. Uysk looked out of his depth with Chisora in 2021 before getting the AJ fight. Fury looked like a terrible fatty before Wilder in 2018. They all need to look very bad to get a title shot.
