it's not a home stereo, it's a plane cockpit, where you really WANT to have things utilitarian. Considering this plane is old, it can be safely concluded that whatever they made works decently. Light blue is actually green, I think it has a calming effect, so the crew thinks clearer.

Avionvideo has a DVD entitled 'Veteran Airliners at work' featuring IL-62s at Istanbul Airport (I presume they are Ms), DC8/9s, B 727s, BAC-111s and some of the last B 707s operating from Sharjah Airport which closed for a time after a 707 crash last year. There are also two 'World Air Routes' DVDs on Cubana, one that features its Airbus 320/330 and ATR models, and another featuring IL-62Ms, AN-24RVs and YAK 42Ds. Unfortunately this one sold out shortly after being released.

@av21031 But the fact is that in both cases fire erupted in cargo bay No.4, in both cases fire detection system wasn't sufficient or simply it didn't exist, in both cases there was no fire suppression system, and fire remained undetected for very long time, both planes had flammable materials in rear part of fuselage,both planes lost elevator controls. That's why those accidents looked so similar.

Cubana has just retired its last two IL-62s (Mar 1) at a ceremonial flight at Jose Marti. The journal 'Granma' ran an emotive lead article about it on Mar 11 titled 'Tribute to a Titan.' The first Cubana plane CU T1208 was delivered in 1977 and 28 were operated by them. The article praised the plane's elegance, reliability and safety and mentioned the various world leaders & dignitaries (including Pope John Paul) who had flown in them.

@av21031 After that Il-62's were modified but also only then engine's producer started cooperation with Polish side and the aim was to find appropriate diagnostic methods that would allow to detect bearing's failure. Engines were not originally equipped with proper vibration detectors so they had to be purchased by LOT, and this equipment came from Switzerland. The method proved to be effective but in some cases engines removed for repairs were still safe to use.

@rrynek Possibly because 1) TU-154 can be operated with rather basic facilities 2) does not have paired engines (% of contagious failure is lower) and 3) has longer engine service. One article years ago quoted Polish govt spokesman saying that LOT found IL-62 'expensive' to operate and required overhaul at 2500 -3500 hrs. This is longer than other airlines like CSA who only TESTED IL-62 to 3000+ hrs without maintenance (but not in passenger service) and did regular turbine checks.

@av21031 An interesting thing is that Cubana never purchased Il-62's, only Il-62M's. Original Il-62's were leased from Aeroflot and Tarom and Cubana was first airline outside USSR to receive Il-62M so they didn't have to deal with NK-8 engines. Both Polish accidents are well documented and it is clear what happened the only thing people argue about is why it happened.

@av21031 The other thing is that B-707 had its maiden flight in 1954 and it started service in 1958( just like DC-8). There was no Il-62 back then, let alone Il-62M which was introduced in 1974. Most of them were made prior to 1967 when Il-62 entered service and production ceased in 1978, at least for airlines, because production of military variants ceased in 1991. Boeing also made more than 800 C-135, KC135, E-3, E-8 etc. 500 of which are still in use in US today.

@av21031 What can be found in Interflug's and in LOT's records is that according to manufacturer engines in Il-62 were expected to survive 5000 flight hours between overhauls and in both airlines it couldn't be reached. Majority of LOT's engines had to be sent for repairs after 2000-3000 hrs, and in case of some engines it was as short as 1700 hrs (as in case of engine which had uncontained failure in 1980).

@rrynek Yes DSM-SEA was the first IL-62 used by Interflug, and a heat exchange coupling unit was not conected properly and escaping hot air burned some electrical insulation. The report didn't say if it was a maintenance issue or assembly. Several western websites wrongly attributed the accident to 'engine failure.' Interflug had one accident with DDR-SEW when an elevator lock was left in place and the plane could not take off. They had 24 IL-62s and some were still flying in 2009

Well, I flew a French made aircraft for 8 years that started out light blue in the cockpit . Then, my company changed all the cockpits to gray. It didn't increase one bit the amount of "fatigue" I felt during long flights after the change. So, I'd say I'm pretty educated in this, and it did not work.

@rrynek Interflug modified some IL-62s to reduce fuel, and according to Thiel, they found maintenance of the engines and all mechanical components to be straightforward and easily accessed. I would not be surprised that IL-62s require more frequent maintenance than newer planes as it was Russia's 1st long range jet airliner and while not as reliable as IL-86 and IL-96, had better range than comparable types such as Boeing 707 and VC10 (as well as wide-bodied IL-86).

First flight was 1963 and its still in civilian and govt service.

@av21031 A fact of a matter is that B-707's are currently used mainly in 3rd world countries. Some of them are almost 40 years old. Many of B707's survived 60000 hours of flight, or more and it wouldn't have been possible if they had had some structural issues (like DH Comet for example). As for Il-62- some Polish pilots from LOT airlines still claim they liked those planes. One of them said he particularly liked strong wings.

@flight5055 I have noticed some differences between accidents in Poland and the one in Dominican Republic. In both Polish crashes engine was damaged in the area of turbine, whereas in case of Cuban either compressor or fan was damaged. Turbine is much hotter so in Cuban Il there was no fire inside fuselage. Cuban plane made safe landing so I guess there was no damage to flight controls or there had been a backup system installed. Landing gear was down so no problem with hydraulics

@av21031 The fact that overhaul was lengthy and delay won't help to improve the reputation of this plane in Poland. But Poland is not the only country where people complain about quality of Russian planes. There's a website about planes used by Interflug and Il-62 is described there as well. Interflug in general was satisfied with this type but author also describes some of its problems. One of them was that engines were "thirsty" and they would never reach intended flight hours between repairs.

@rrynek The Boeing 707 had 166 hull losses (not 40, note the wikipedia page only lists the notable ones) and by far the highest crash rate of any long range jet at the time (more than double that of IL-62M, and higher than DC8) according to ICAO. Air France alone lost four 707s in catastrophic crashes (all killed except for 2 survivors from one crash). The 707 had both structural and landing gear design faults and is no longer commercially operated in the US.

@rrynek I hadn't heard that they expected to do 5000hrs but am sure about the CSA data. They tested one plane beyond 3000 hrs with no maintenance but only in testing. CSA operated IL-62s between1969-97 and lost one (OK-DBF) in a nightime landing in Syria as you will know. It was controlled flight into terrain due to a language mis-understanding of altitude settings between the crew and control tower (ft vs metres). They used an IL-62 and three IL-62Ms as govt transports from 1974-1996.

@av21031 The tail strike was sufficient enough to send this Jumbo for repairs in Taiwan and then in China. After that plane survived more than 20 years with more than 20000 flights and more than 60000 flight hours with compromised structural strength because repairs had not been carried out properly. It survived longer than typical B-707. Boeing made B707's until 1991 but those were made for military operators only, there were no orders for passenger b-707's after 1978

@av21031 There were 15 Tu-154M's( 14 for LOT 1 for government) delivered between 1986-1990. In November 1987 one of them had exactly the same kind of engine failure as Il-62M in May 1987. Luckily pilot was able to land safely because this time there was no damage to crucial airplane's systems. This incident also helped to prove that a faulty bearing was a reason of engine failure which occurred in Il-62M

B-747s which crashed in flights JAL 123 and CAF611 had been damaged before. In JAL 123 pressure bulkhead was damaged so it wasn't a minor damage. Subsequent repair was not carried out properly and plane crashed 7 years later (i.e. initial damage happened in 1978 and plane crashed in 1985). Chinese B-747 sustained damage to its tail in 1980.It wasn't repaired properly and plane crashed because of it 22 years later. Such accident wouldn't have happened to plane which hadn't been damaged before.

@av21031 Prior to 1985( when first Tu-154M arrived in Poland) those were the most advanced commercial airplanes in Polish aviation and only the best, the most experienced crews were allowed to use them. @av21031 As you are probably aware Tu-154M was powered with D-30KU engines- very similar to those from Il-62M. 3 or 4 Tu's were delivered to LOT prior to accident in 1987. How is it possible that government, as an owner of LOT airlines, could afford to deliver brand new engines (with planes attached to them) and at the same time could not afford to pay for overhauls of engines installed in Il-62's and demanded to exceed their service life? It just doesn't add up.

@rrynek Many accidents indeed happen in that order. I'm sure that Interflug never had any serious engine failures (eg see Thiel's book) although they did have IL-62 bird strikes. And don't forget DM-SEA was their first IL-62. As to LOT, the overhaul interval is less important than maintenance carried out BETWEEN overhauls. Our national airline has been able to repair/test engines for decades. We have had a few accidents (old DCs), but hardly ever engine-related ones.

@av21031 The B767 is of the era of the IL-86/IL-96/Tu-204 which have far longer engine overhaul periods. The IL-62 wasn't as expensive to operate as some others of its time (it was cheaper than the the VC-10) although 1960s DK-30 technology were behind that of P&W. Later Russian engines overhaul at 11 000 hrs or longer. Nonetheless, planes with paired engines would still require more thorough maintenance than wing mounted no matter what engine was used.
@av21031
14 жыл бұрын
@rrynek So you must also know that Russian planes operate in conditions far more demanding than is typical of western planes (which is why they are used in 3rd world countries). As far as B707, there were so many structural failures in regular service that I don't think anyone would argue that it was a safe design even for its era. IL-62 is still flying in 2010 and very highly regarded in the countries that operated it - all EXCEPT Poland (which sort of speaks for itself).
@rrynek

@av21031 According to author this would not lead to engine failures but engines required frequent overhauls. There was also an issue with insufficient insulation of hot-air tube in the rear of plane. As a result of this flaw one of Interflug's Il-62's was lost in crash in 1972. It was the worst air disaster in GDR at the time and Ilyushin never took responsibility for it although a problem was corrected after the accident.

@av21031 Officially D-30KU engines were expected to last (before overhaul) 3000h in Il-62M and 5000h in Tu-154M when used by LOT. At the same time CF-6 engines used in B-767 would have overhauls every 8000-10000hrs, and those were only two engines, not four like in Il-62. You shouldn't be surprised that Il-62 looked expensive. After an accident in 1987 the time between overhauls was reduced- it was 2500 hrs and later 1500hrs for Il-62 and 2500hrs for Tu-154.
@rrynek
14 жыл бұрын
@av21031 Even if you consider that there was no engine failure in case of DM-SEA it is obvious that certain problems with Il-62 remained unsolved for 15 years and certain modifications to Polish Il-62M's were done only some 9 months after an accident in 1987. And that's because it took several months to convince Soviet leaders that there was something wrong with plane and engines. There was an agreement signed by deputy prime ministers from both countries in November 1987.

@av21031 Unfortunately Tu-154's used by government suffered from certain mechanical failures and most importantly some of them occurred after a major overhaul which was carried out in 2009. The second Tu-154 was sent for similar overhaul to Samara in January 2010 and it was meant to be completed on 22nd of July 2010, but delivery will be delayed because Russians had some problem with electrical cables( mainly with TAWS system).

@rrynek There were cases of near new B-707s crashing due to structual/mechanical failure (apart from Air France cases, also BOAC 911, NOA flight 705, PanAm 214 to name just some where all on board died). BOAC 911 was a total fuselage failure and investigations showed that there were known strucural weaknesses. Even 747s have crashed due to very minor damage (tail strike) that later caused the plane to break up mid flight (JAL 123 & CAF 611) although it is far safer than the 707.

@av21031 The only information about Il-62M was that this model was to replace regular Il-62 after the accident, because engines in 'M' version were expected to last longer. But the truth was that first Il-62M arrived in Poland in 1979- that is before an accident. It's also a mistake to claim that both of those accidents were a result of the same decisions made by Polish government.

The human easily detects the color of green more than the others. Green is considered to be a "healthy" color, which might explain why a lot of hospitals use the color of green in their hospitals. @mackat4ck The fist PC monitors used green because it was supposed to be that part of the spectrum most visible under different lighting. A colour too inviting or 'relaxing' may not have been appropriate in the '60s when piloting demanded more manual and alert skills than today. In modern planes with digital readouts and many automatic functions, colour probably doesn't matter as much. Cuba is certainly going to miss these planes as they were very popular.

@ffighter DC-8 and B-707 were among first successful jet airliners. Il-62, VC-10 and B-727 were introduced later. Let me include hull-loss rate of some Soviet "Pioneers": Tu-104=17,9% (37 out of 207), Tu-124=13,4% (15 out of 112 made). You should also remember that both Tupolevs were withdrawn from active service at least 18 years ago whereas B-707 is still in use. B-707 was involved in some 40 hull-loss accidents and in some cases planes were more than 35 years old.

@av21031 The point is that safety record of B-707 isn't any worse compared to jets used in 1960's such as Tu-104, Caravelle, or turbo-props such as Vickers Viscount or Il-18. And of course DC-8 is more durable- some of them spent more than 80000 hours in the air with up to 50000 cycles (take-offs and landings). B-707 would normally be withdrawn from service after 60000 hours and 20000 cycles. Many of structural issues of B-707 could be attributed to very intense use (i.e 4000 flight hours/year)

@av21031 I am not surprised that when someone compares the last flight of DM-SEA in 1972 and the last flight of Polish SP-LBG in 1987 one might think that both accidents happened for the same reason i.e engine failure. Description of what happened was very similar in both cases. You just need to replace Berlin with Warsaw: take off, climbing, reported loss of elevator at 8000-9000m, reported return to airport, emergency descent, fuel dumping, reported loss of control and fire on board and crash.

@rrynek There were other Boeing structural failures (roofs/doors etc), but the 747 has a very good safety record overall. As for Polish views on Tu-154 when the presidential plane crashed many blamed the plane without thinking. Polish records show that LOT was told to regularly exceed jet engine service life to save money in the '80s. One wonders why such records were only released after 30 years and why LOT never had equipment to test/service large engines like NK8/D-30 until after 1987.

@av21031 In a previous post you mentioned difficult conditions in which Soviet planes operated. In cases of BOAC 911, NOA 705 and PanAm 214 accidents happened also in extreme weather conditions- in thunderstorm or in very strong turbulence. The other thing is that all accidents of B-707 happened before Il-62 entered service but you still compare those two types of airliners. B-707 was older design.

@av21031 B-767 became available for airlines in 1981 and roughly at the same period LOT began to replace its original Il-62's with newer Il-62M's. And it was the only long range plane Soviet Union could offer at the time. Because of political tensions between East and West, there was no chance LOT could have bought anything from USA or any Airbus (like A300). And there is no point of comparing VC-10 to Il-62- production of VC-10 ceased in 1970 and LOT received first Il-62 in 1972.

@av21031 Someone within IPN decided it would be appropriate to release some records on 30th anniversary of the first crash in March 1980. But those records refer to this accident only and they don't mention the second one. They describe alleged cost-cutting measures imposed on LOT by government between 1977 and 1980. They don't say anything about savings that would be required in 1980's. Those records confirm what was said about engines in Interflug i.e frequent repairs.

@av21031 A purchase of VC-10 by LOT was never an option then and this particular plane was unwanted child even by BOAC and you have to remember this plane was designed for BOAC's requirements. @av21031 Due to martial law in Poland certain long range flights were deleted (i.e to Chicago and New York). In 1985 LOT ordered first Tu-154M's and this plane was much more suitable for medium range flights than Il-62(more efficient, faster, easier to maintain with 3 engines etc). Effectively the most experienced pilots (i.e. from Il-62's) lost some very well paid routes to their younger colleagues. And they started complaining about Tu-154 claiming it was unsafe.

@av21031 Tu-154 was always regarded as a bad plane by many people in Poland, worse even than Il-62, regardless of the fact that none of Polish Tu-154's crashed before 2010. According to one of Tu-154 pilots from LOT it all started within airline. Il-18 was used by LOT on medium range routes prior to 1985, but because of its noisy turbo-prop engines, more comfortable Il-62 would often be used instead. So in early 1980's Il-62 was used for both long and medium range flights.

Then they sent report to manufacturer to inform russian engineers that their aircraft IL - 62 is faulty and warn them that it can course more deaths. The Geniuses from Iliuszyn factory, who made absolutely unsafe crap copy of Vickers VC - 10, replied to polish investigators on over 70 pages lots of bollocks that engine was failure ...because of crash.

@av21031 They particularly didn't like its flight control system, they preferred old-fashion mechanical controls on Il-62. The fact was that in both crashes in Poland flight controls of Il-62 proved to be very vulnerable. Nevertheless LOT was very reluctant to use Tu-154's and got rid of them quickly. As for Tu-154's used by government it was a different story. Over the last 20 years if Polish media mentioned Tupolev in most of the cases they would have spoken about its failures.

@falconflyer34 I have seen photos of cockpits in MiG-21, -23, 25. They've all got the same colour as the one in Il-62. MiG-29 has got gray one though. It seems that Russians came up with the same conclusion (i.e that did not work) or they just ran out of paint;)

@Alvedon500mg If you want to find an answer you need to check other videos where Il-62's cockpit is visible. Those pilots are very short but at the same time cockpit is large.

Someone suggested that Air Koryo is looking to buy Cubana's remaining 62s when Cuba finally get around to replacing them - does anyone know if this is true? I heard that the humid and salty climate has taken its toll on the airframes.

@kandiys hmm... never thought of that. But how come other planes use grey or brown as with airbus and boeing?

@av21031 Hull loss doesn't always mean a crash- a plane doesn't need to be in the air to be destroyed, for example one Il-62 was destroyed in 1992 because some moron smoked cigarettes during refueling. And there were more of such accidents in case of B707. This included hangar fires, planes destroyed by gunfire, shot down by fighters, terrorist attacks etc. B707 without 'hush-kits' wouldn't be allowed to some US airports even in 1980's .

@mackat4ck Because it is comfortable to look at, even for a long time, however not only planes made by the russians, but subways and trains have that colour as well. ;) Hope I've been most helpful.
