Performed on April 22nd, 2019 at the Bales Organ Recital Hall at the University of Kansas by Jacob Hofeling in his second DMA organ recital.
One of the great organ virtuosi of all time, Karl Straube, is well known for his sponsorship of the music of Max Reger. Full of chromaticism, monumental form, and expressive dynamic contrasts, Reger’s music takes its place among the great German Romantic repertoire. Much less known, however, is the music of Straube’s teacher, Heinrich Reimann (1850-1906). Reimann was born in what is now Klodzko Poland and studied organ with Moritz Brosig. When he moved to Berlin, Reimann established himself as one of the great organists of the time. He was the organist of the Berlin Philharmonic for many years, and regularly wrote the program notes for the Philharmonic. He published a number of books on music theory, the music of Bach, and numerous other topics. He was appointed as the organist at Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin which then housed the largest Sauer German Romantic organ of the time. He actively performed and advocated for the music of Bach.
Reimann’s most popular work, Phantasie uber den Choral “Wie schoen leuchtet der Morgenstern” was highly acclaimed by Straube and Max Reger. This massive piece features unique features such as markings that indicate use of the Rohrschweller, a German mechanical innovation that allowed for gradual addition or subtraction of stops on an organ, as well as writing the text of the chorale within the music. The music is written in a number of sections; a dramatic introduction with vorimitation of the chorale tune, followed by a crescendo and massive decrescendo to the statement of the chorale tune against a sparkling chord in the right hand. He then writes a number of variations using the chorale tune in the tenor, then soprano, and even the pedal. Following a large decrescendo, he changes gears to a delightful trio section with an original melody and then states the chorale one last time before fading into nothing.
The fugue begins in a very soft dynamic and gradually builds in volume while sneaking in brief snippets of the chorale tune until the final moment where the fugue subject is juxtaposed in the pedal against the chorale tune in the hands. The piece ends brilliantly with triple pedal, and large crashing Romantic chords that end with a wonderful resolution.
