Helen Fisher, Department of Anthropology der Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, sprach am 12. Juli 1999 in der Carl Friedrich von Siemens Stiftung über "The Nature of Romantic Love. The Biology, Function, Evolution, and Cultural Impact of Obsessive Romantic Passion":
"Mammals have evolved three primary emotion systems for mating and reproduction: 1) the sex drive; 2) attraction, or mate preference; 3) attachment. The lecture will examine the principal biological and behavioral components of each emotion system in humans. Then I shall discuss my ongoing project using fMRI brain scanning; this investigation is attempting to establish the neural correlates of romantic attraction. Furthermore, I shall examine the specific biopsychological components of human attraction, propose the evolutionary function of obsessive romantic passion, and discuss the contribution of this emotion system to current worldwide patterns of adultery, divorce, stalking, homicide and clinical depression."
