This is soul stirringly beautiful music... Reminds me that there is still beauty in this world, even when there seems to be nothing but utter and complete turmoil.

I have many sparks within my heart and mind that continually renew and give me strength and happiness every day. But when I need a tiny one for my soul, I come here and listen to 4 or 5 of your songs and the air clears and becomes bright, and purpose regains traction. Your playing is a conversation of human emotion that finds all the missing pieces and fills in all the gaps. I hope you are well, Iain, and enjoying a rewarding life. You and your music are greatly missed. ❤️

My favorite HJL piece :) You have a mystical and arresting playing style, Iain - a tender, sensitive approach, lithe fingers floating over the keys to gently reveal the personality of the music. This is a very beautiful performance, both visually and emotionally.

Un-pause. 4 Days ago, I stumbled upon this "peace". Mysteriously, I'm back. Not sure how; or even why i got the privilege... again. One thing's for certain, it's not by coincidence. If I can stumble upon peace twice in 4 days, then WE surely can once in OUR lifetime.

Iain, just wanted to share. I was first introduced to HJL by your collaboration cover of The Aviators with acuity1980 (which was awesome btw!). Immediately after listening, I listened to all 3 of her albums, on repeat a few times, and then decided, being a pianist of over 2 decades myself, that I had to have the sheet music, and bought the sheet music books for Porcelain and Intervention that day. Her music is captivating, calming, revitalizing, and uplifting. Your playing is beautiful. I first found your page while searching for Yann Tiersen's main piece from Amelie, which I won't attempt to spell right now, and subbed before the song even ended. I've been playing piano a while, but am new to the production process, just starting in May of this year (Cubase). I have grown to really love the production process. You seem to be a master of the mixing and producing aspect! I especially love the soft, echoing reverb you've added to the whole piece, which I actually think I prefer over the original. And it goes without saying the strings are outstanding. I am struggling over deciding which piece I want to cover of hers. This piece ranks very high on my list, along with Eclipse, Through the Dark, Turn Away, Porcelain, and If I Could. I did do a cover of Yann Tiersen's Le Matin, which was the 2nd song I ever uploaded since starting this account a few months ago, though I added no effects or production of any kind. Do you have any tips for your lovely strings and production quality? I have, like you, been learning it all through trial and error. Listening to your music is very inspirational. Amazing quality...you have a real ear for the gentle nature and quiet power of the piano. Looking forward to more as always.

Hey, Zack, thank you for your message. It's great that you have discovered HJL's music through my channel. I'm a Logic Pro X user and use various piano sample libraries rather the stock voice of the digital piano (my favourite at the moment is The Giant by Native Instruments). The strings are LA Scoring Strings by AudioBro and, while not cheap, are leaps and bounds ahead of other competing string libraries in my opinion. I guess the only general advice I can give is to keep educating yourself and never think you've learned it all. Read books and join the online mixing and production communities to share and learn. Three books that have helped me are "Guide to Midi Orchestration" by Paul Gilreath, "Mixing Audio - Concepts, Practices and Tools" by Roey Izhaki and "Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio" by Mike Senior. Check out the Recording Revolution blog as well for regular tips and tricks on mixing. And finally, just keep making music. All the theory in the world won't do anything at all until you start working on projects. You won't get it right every time (I certainly don't!) but a lesson can be learned to then apply to future projects. Hope this has been helpful and good luck to you!

***** Awesome thanks so much for the thought-out reply! I appreciate it and the names of the string VSTs you use! I haven't used any piano libraries other than what came with my digital piano yet, though the piano itself (Kawai ES7) has quite a few piano variations to choose from, and all sound excellent, but I will have to check out native instruments and LA scoring strings. When you purchase and download them, do they automatically integrate into your library in logic? I've been reading through a few forums for production and watching youtube tutorials. Funny you mentioned the books, I actually purchased mixing secrets for the small studio by Mike senior about a month ago and am halfway through reading it. I'll check those other 2 out too. Great advice from Senior so far. Thank you again for you reply, it's been very helpful to me!

Fantastic Iain!! I can't believe how good you are at playing the piano and adding all these extra tracks to your performances. Did you learn all this wizardry on your own? It really sounds like you hired Sir Neville Marriner and his famous Academy of St Martin in the Fields chamber orchestra. I am not kidding. It is THAT GOOD! Thank you for sharing your joy for music with us!

Hey, Mikael! Thanks so much, you're making me blush! I'm quite proud of this one as it just all came together beautifully the way I wanted it. The piece is actually of very personal nature to me also so it had to be as perfect as I could make it. Yes, I have fallen in love with recording and producing so I work really hard at it really just by trial and error and something you don't like in one recording you can always avoid that mistake in the next and so on. I do love these strings though and they are getting better each time I include them! :-)

Such quality. Really, it sounds wonderful, Iain. I love the visual effect on the video, it looks like an album cover... have you considered releasing one? :) The style of the whole piece, the subtle strings building in the background, the beautiful melody and perfect rhythm have placed this straight into my favourites, along with many of your other pieces. Can't wait to hear more from you :)

Hi! The piano is a Yamaha YDP 141 but I should say that the sound you hear is not the piano's default voice. I connect the piano to a sequencer on the computer and use a piano library called The Giant by Native Instruments.
