Hey Todd, nice to see you doing some good stuff up on KZitem. Just wanted to let you know that this review was super helpful for me. I'm having windings issues on my old Helicore Hybrid set, so this is very topical for me. I loved the way you played a diverse range of registers and styles, identically on both string sets, and pizz and arco. This approach is not exciting but it is super informative, so thank you. I'm going with Evah Pirazzi...

Hi Ben. Great to hear from you. Yeah, for my playing (and definitely my bass), the Evah Pirazzi are far better. However, I could see someone preferring the Helicore if they want more punch, something brighter, or need to have a student bass easier to play. (the Evah Pirazzi take a little more work to get them to vibrate, especially in the high register) Thanks for saying hi! - Todd

The Hybrid Helicore Strings have a Stranded Steel Core that helps them break in faster.

Yes, the core is very different between the two. I feel like the Helicore probably last a little longer due to the metal core. It also give a little more punch. But the Evahs are a smooth lush break in period. I actually like the Evahs when they start to die, but that sweet spot after about a month of use is golden.

Hey great video!!! My name is Jorge I just bought my first ever EUB! The Palatino V550 and I was recommended to change the string to hybrids I was told the ddarrios were good but after watching this I’m liking the other pair… I play eletric bass so I have some experience but yesterday was the first time playing an upright and it basically came to me kinda naturally. As a beginner what would you recommend?

If you are coming from electric, you will probably prefer the Helicores as good strings to cross you over. Plus they are way cheaper. I personally love the Evah Pirazzis, but they do require work to get them to sing. Hope that helps!

Hi there, although I like the purity of tone of Evah but if someone likes to get a string with slightly more pronounced air and high frequency overtones or tone complexity, color, etc. is there any other string out there that works well for both arco and pizzicato. I am not after the most classical sounding arco but something with less metallic quality than Helicore but with more vibrant and complex sounding than Evah. Also I like a string that is an easy player (less tension) with warm yet expressive tone. I am more targeting South European or middle eastern kind of emotional expression folk music like the tone of Renaud Garcia Fons: kzitem.info/news/bejne/rW9vtneqjIiDa6g

In your case, the Helicore might actually be the better option. I believe they give a better arch response than Spirocore. The Evahs need to be “learned”. I love them, but they do require some work and are not very pronounced in upper harmonics.

@@ToddUrban Thanks Todd for your quick response. Is there any trick to make string be tamed to not create metallic or harshness with the bow? Adding rosin to the string in the area that bowing happns or sanding, etc.? If I can make the Helicores a bit tamed for bowing, it will be a good of both worlds for me. Also people suggest Pirastro Flexcore or Prestoflex or Presto Balance Hybrid. What do you think about those? Thanks again.

It’s been a while since I’ve tried flexicore, so I can’t say. In terms of metallic sound, the helicore aren’t metallic to me, but maybe a little hallow at times. After a break in period, they do seem to fill out more. Also more rosin does help me get more of the fundamental, but will also sometime get more of that gritty rosin sound, which can be good or bad. If anything, I’d suggest trying different rosins too. Each one has a different sound. Pops is very granny, but very gritty. Carlsson or Nymann are much smoother to me.

@@ToddUrban thanks a lot Todd for your response. I am also thinking about Zyex. Apparently it is good for both pizz and arco. Do you know those ones?

I have had both of these sets of strings, in medium gauge, on my old Czech flat back, in the past. The helicore hybrid string is the only string I have bought twice in a row other than Spirocores. But, for the last three years or so, the bass has been strung up with Spirocores, again.

Hey Tom! Nice. Spirocires never worked for me on any bass, but I know tons of people who love them. But I also prefer a more gradual transient for a Charlie Haden style sound, rather than the more precise attack. Either way, I’m sure you sound killing on whatever goes on your bass. 😉

@@ToddUrban Thanks for the kind words, Todd! Yeah, there is definitely a love camp and a hate camp for Spirocores. I guess I’m somewhere in the middle, ha ha. It’s great to hear you play upright. Charlie’s tone was amazing. I was listening to that first old and new dreams album many years ago, and I was blown away. I think that was the album that inspired me to put Chordas on my bass. Expensive, and thick, but very nice Strings.

When you mentioned the price difference I was like, “ahhh, right, of course...!” It was a clear win for the Evah Pirazzis - sounding way fuller and more even. I imagine they’d record better and sit better in a mix too with their more balanced frequency content. The helicores had a much brighter, more brittle quality, to my ear, and did that thing that some upright bass players seem to love of being all clicky and buzzy without any midrange. The old smileyface eq, I guess... but it’s never been to my taste tbh. Anyhow, lovely clear and thorough test dude. Thanks :) 👍

Hi George! Thanks for checking it out. Yeah, to my ear, the Evah Pirazzi fit my style much better. But you also need to work harder to get the sound out. So there is a trade off. Great to hear from you.
