Looking at the design; could there be for lack of a better term a locking block in the top of the pistol frame that meshes with the gaps in the cylinder? Cool looking gun, silly design choice, great movie.

Love the movie. It'd be very difficult to have that in place given what they show. It could be possible to make this work-and would shave a bit of weight off a heavy gun, so might be worth it. But it does not look like they had that in mind.

It's not even so much a thing of detail as just not understanding why firearms are made like they are. People study firearms for years to understand all of the ins and outs of any given weapon type, why certain weapons do or don't do certain things, or why people do or don't make firearms in a certain way. Expecting every single detail to be correct or to adhere to real life stuff is just a massive expectation. That said, if he knew that I'm certain he wouldn't have used that design. But still. He went with a weapon design because it was unique and interesting. And that has a place in movies. Besides, the number of idiotic weapons designed by real people in real life that are so much worse than this one is genuinely mind blowing.

Perhaps Hellboy is just impervious to the minimal damage from his own gun. Because he's a badass.

Two things of note: One, the Samaritan is apparently made from different religious and mystic materials; cold iron, metal from a church bell, wood from the true cross, ect. The limited supply of these materials could have necessitated that the already-bulky gun be stripped back, with the custom rounds given a more robust casing to compensate. Two, Hellboy has very poor manual dexterity, his bulky right hand has a hard time reloading or holding the gun, meaning that wide, cut-open cylinders may be the only way to reliably slip a round in in the heat of battle.

I cannot say that the person who designed the costumes doesn't like detail I can argue that they are not the same person who designed the weapon props

Wouldn't the round lined up with the barrel be supported by the top of the gun? I'm not saying it would do a good a job as normal, or even make it work, but it could help.

Cons: no cartridge support. Pros: makes for a good skullbasher when out of ammo.

Sometimes, especially in fiction, rule of cool wins. Its especially good in this case because the cylinder now makes a cross like design! At least its not Bethesda design.

Just as well though, cos HB acknowledges hes a terrible shot and much prefers hand to hand, and bludgeoning with his sledgehammer of an arm

Okay maybe I'm the idiot here, but a shot lined up to fire is in the shrouded top-aligned chamber, which... from the look of it, is sealed by the upper once in place and ready for the hammer.
