I love how Miyazaki clearly isn't used to hugging people as a standard greeting.

Perhaps he was handing it out just in case John or anyone else would rather shake hands than hug, so it's like he was thinking "here's my hand, oh what the heck" He probably does that at every business place no matter who likes hand shakes or hugs. Some prefer neither.

Lol at Miyazaki. He's all like "Handshake handshake handshake- fine, hug."

Fabia Walker Perhaps Miyazaki had his hand out in case either Lasseter or anyone else just wanted to shake instead of hug, but I guess he accepts that his close companion is a hugger when he wants to be and tolerates it instead of crying out in distress and escaping on a dragon he called upon from one of his films.

In Japan, especially at Hayao Miyazaki's age, there was no culture of hugging between men, so I think he was a little shy🤣

This was a very fascinating video to watch, especially because you can really feel Mr. Lasseter's enthusiasm. I also really like how it was filmed to look like a home video.

On the IMDb page for Ponyo, I was shocked to discover John Lasseter, Brad Lewis and Peter Sohn were the "directors" for the English dub. (They're listed in "Other Crew".)

Then again, I don't see Miyazaki or his producer crying out in distress over Lasseter hugging him or shaking his hand. If they're such good friends, he probably is already aware that John is a hugger and he's alright with it as long as nobody is being run over or jumped on every time it happens. If not, he'd be running away in terror out the door or all over the studio, calling upon for the ancient spirits to come save him. Sad that nowadays any form of minor touching like hugs, pats, or hand shakes is "sexual harassment" according to the witch hunting MeToo Movement. I'll admit that I'm a hugger myself when it comes to family and friends, and even seeing my favorite characters at the Disney parks.

@shreddedbeats They did, back in 1887 "Esperanto" was constructed; it was purely based on Latin (which made me wonder, why not just Latin itself). Less than 1.5 million people around the world speak it.

Uh oh, someone think of the children before he touches and hugs another again! Then again, Miyazaki is touching him too so I guess all forms of touching, even harmless ones makes you or me sex predators. Now all we have to hear are people from Ghibli Studios making complaints about male coworkers "touching" them.

Miyazaki to Lasseter... American audiences need to learn Japanese to understand my movies. Me to Miyazaki: You need to learn English to make movies that American audiences understand! LOL
