I honestly like these tests. Even with the actual surplus helmets. It just shows that helmets were most likely meant for shrapnel and indirect shots. I wasn't sure what to expect with this helmet.

When you are really knowledgefull about historical helmets, you should recognize, that german helmets M16 to M 51 (M53?) helmet of german Bundesgrenzschutz and Bereitschaftspolizeien of the german states are descendants of medieval Schaller/ sallet, while french Adrian and british Brodie had been descendants of Eisenhut/ kettle hat.

mild steel is pretty much all the same at a certain thickness. these were made cheap not to endure. may save someone from a low energy object that would otherwise puncture the skin. or with an untied helmet, take the energy away as the helmet flies off.

Yep. Similar in performance, which isn't great, but it's better than nothing as Devin said.

as far as i know, the og M35 use silicon-nickel-manganese steel, hardened (30 to 55HRC hardness, lots of variability in papers i have read, and issues with lots of residual stresses) with a very random mix of structures (some pearlite, some cementite, some ferrite there and there) for replicas, it's either mild steel (so pure ferrite) or basic austenitic stainless steels (so, thing like AISI201, 304, 316)

Yeah, I mean, I guess from the zombie apocalypse or what not, it is better to have a mild steel helmet than nothing on the head.
@Sturmtruppen7

Yeah I mean well I'm not suggesting to use mild steel helmets as ballistic protection but in a zombie apocalypse or s*** hits the fan it is sure better than nothing! Also take this into consideration, there was a guy in Ukraine in American volunteer who never wore a helmet at all and didn't believe in helmets I forgot the guy's name but he died from shrap metal or Flack to his head. If the guy was just wearing a mild steel reproduction helmet, even a medieval one, he would have been okay, at least from that outcome.

by the way, i have a suggestion for your potential future balistic test: maybe add .17HMR if you can/have acess to something that shoot it/have a friend that can to the threat list (as it's a super light weight and fast round, that could be a decent approximation for high velocity fragments)

When i was a child, such helmets, black painted, with an added neck proection leather, had been used by westgerman firemen. A similar helmet , made of Aluminium was later used from mid 1970s to about 2010. Today may be some rural firedepartments still use it. German firebrigade equipment companies still produce a similar helmet of modern plastic material, but as far as i know, this plastic versions are no more used by ,frontline' firemen, but by rearline firemen and medics of ambulance cars and ambulance helicopters.

Great to see another one of these Mike! Your ballistic tests are great, and I find myself referencing them semi-frequently when discussing helmets. It's nice that someone is out there archiving this sort of thing, and I think you might be the only one doing it in any serious capacity.
