If it is wired anything like a Suzuki SV or Vstrom the starting and headlight main circuit run through the RHS control. On start the button cuts out the headlight to give more starting current to the starter motor. Because of the design all the current goes through the switchgear. Also on the Suzuki there is a main connector from the main harness to the instrument cluster. Once again the headlight current goes through this connector and can cause the earth wire to heat up and melt the plug and connector. (Ask me how I know). I would disassemble and inspect the RHD switchgear and the plug for signs of burning /overheating. Sometimes cleaning the contacts can help. Based on your display not working I would concentrate on the harness to Display adaptor.

That’s exactly where I’d start. It is an old bike so the electronic gremlins would possibly be the cause... Good luck!

Were you able to sort the problem? I would think is a bad wiring, more than a bad connector. I had a some what similar issue with my Ducati's ABS system would go off if I turned the steering, is was a broken wire in a wiring loom.
