Foodbanks reduce food waste. Grocery stores are pressured by time to waste perfectly good food. It's not the freshest, not necessarily the highest quality but it is food and the poorest don't have to dumpster dive for. Foodbanks endeavour to treat everyone with dignity. Many volunteers are themselves clients trying to give back to a system that they benefit from. This allows them to build a sense of community, working together with others and getting back a sense of dignity by at least trying to be part of the solution. Clients are not required to volunteer. Unless they present a danger to other clients, volunteers or staff clients are not refused. Coupons and foodstamps are themselves stigmatizing. And recipients are not given any opportunity to contribute to that system. Foodbanks would like nothing better than to be out of a job. A shuttered foodbank means no one is in need, friends and neighbors have stepped up to ensure no one is hungry. This would be ideal. Should governments do more to alleviate poverty? Absolutely. They should stop giving endless concessions to the wealthy and corporations by foregoing taxes and claiming the cupboard is bare when it comes to helping the needy.

The food banks have more purchasing power than one persons grocery card. The food banks supplement those on food stamps and those who don’t qualify for food stamps. Our regional food bank has the buying power to feed a family of four for $1.00 a day. Which is why they rely on money donations they are able to buy truck loads of peanut butter, truck loads of green beans, truck loads of corn, etc..

I disagree, this is a worse idea than the food bank. If you listen to the UBC professor, he is saying that the real solution is a living wage and adequate housing. The key to why a food bank is a better current solution is conversion: an equivalent dollar that one of these cards would give could give more than twice as much food at a food bank. What I do agree: Food banks should not have to exist: food and basic shelter should be a human right. Until this exists, I know food banks are more efficient than these cards, because food banks lack the mark up of inflated store prices, and are fuelled by volunteers.
@CarFreeSegnitz

Kim Annis My concern is for the opportunity to give back. The foodbank where I volunteer is happy to have my help for a few hours or anything up to 40 hrs/week and shows appreciation for whatever help they get. I have the good feeling of contributing to the system that I fear I and my family is going to need later on. As a volunteer I am given the privilege to "shop" behind the scenes within reasonable bounds. And we are fed a warm lunch. By no means are clients compelled to volunteer. Many have serious barriers to working which could be why they're seeking help in the first place. Unless clients present a danger to other clients, volunteers or staff they are not refused. Coupon recipients have no opportunity to give back to the system. Even if they had other means such as time and labour grocery stores don't encourage them to come and work there. Coupon advocates express concern for stigma. Yes, going to the foodbank is stigmatizing but everyone who works at my foodbank do try to treat everyone with dignity and respect. Coupon users are stigmatized as well as it becomes obvious at the cash register. Perhaps coupon advocates might think of handing out cash but don't out of terror that recipients will use the cash for undesirable purchases.

I think one of the main problems with food banks is that a lot of their produce and bread may be spoiled and canned food expired (but not all). Its actually very unappetizing to go there sometimes. It is nice that at church run food pantries/banks you also get to choose between different hygienic items and cleaning supplies. This can be very helpful also. Also if you ask them churches maybe able to help you out with rent in an emergency (or have sign that they have limited rent and utility help at the first of the month). You do have choice at these places you don't have to receive something your not going to use. What is nice is you might end up with a couple things you might not normally buy for yourself. :-)

In France, they have laws that forbid wasting food from grocery stores, and other places. For some, the food banks are crucial, and to think that most of that food would be taken right to a landfill instead of feeding people is unthinkable. People who go to food banks are just people. They don't have the money to spend to buy food as it is too expensive, and so is everything else. There is no lack of dignity in going there. It's free food. It is more than a place for free food. It is often attached to community centers, churches, synagogues, or other community building, and people find friends there and make relationships. Many who go work, but just can't make ends meet. The plan discussed would unravel such an important network. If you could see Britain, and how they are only allowed 1 small bag per month, you would see what hunger really looks like. No one needs to know you go to the food bank unless you tell people. And they have come a long way since a few decades ago when you were given only bags of rice, peanut butter, cheese, powdered milk, oatmeal and cereals. Now the selection is much better.

As a UK resident, this is an interesting variation on foodbanks. UK Food bank uptake is now around 2.5 million a week after over a decade of Conservative social policies which have expended the underclass. The bottom line is this: Food banks mean the government has failed in its duty of care towards its citizens. Look around the world and we can see countries which do not need food banks. People who donate are doing a good thing, but it lets their government off the hook. Poverty is a structural government choice. Thanks.

Food banks have become an integral part of the welfare system with as many controls as the government system itself. These controls rob people of what little dignity they may retain on the government system. As noted in the video food banks were meant to be a short term solution to what was believed to be a short term problem but which has stretched on for years, creating a secondary welfare system. It is a system full of good intentions but one which not only supports inadequate benefits and wages but one which also extends social control of the poor. Further food banks allow the food donors to feel they have done enough to alleviate the problem of hunger in Canada without actually taking a good look at the root causes. It's a feel good solution. Indeed it is time to shut down food banks and demand living wages and benefits or better yet, a guaranteed annual income for all..

why can't we all pitch in, donate/help farm/trade/ barter foods, canned goods, without using money? most, if not all, have skills that others need, and barter, and trade. id be happy to lend time for working on _____, while i can get ____ that i need. my neighbors give us any excess home-grown foods, fruits, and we let them hunt on our place. no loss there.

What a great idea!.....I find that food banks don't give people what they want to eat. I don't eat meat. So it's extra hard. This is a wonderful idea!!!

How much does the lower class spend on cigarettes per month? After paying for cigarettes and booze, the lower class shouldn’t be expected to pay for their own food. That should be the responsibility of taxpayers.

In other words like an EBT card, good idea. I follow a low-carb way of eating and a box of Special-K from a food bank isn't going to help me. But I could get by fine following low-carb on fish heads/trimmings and other cheap meat, kale and Brussels sprouts and things like that, so low-carb is not expensive food.

I hate going thru a good bank. Here is why I find them to be stupid. 1) Most of the crap they give is all the unwanted stuff people didn't end up using in their house. Canned beans, creamed corn...stuff that if I was three days starving I would not eat. Because without much effort, I could ask a local mcdonalds for a handout and they'd give me a 2 dollar cheeseburger. So take your cream of corn when your are done with it, and throw it out. 2) A lot of the people they are giving to, if not most, DO NOT have a can opener. 3) Most of us don't have a stove and if we do, probably no electricity. So what the hell am I going to do with a box of noodles, or fucking rice. Some food banks do ask about the amenities you have access to. Most do not, people in these areas must have no basic education. Some of the stuff you give to us might as well be rocks. Seriously, once you get down to being homeless in this country, it is very very difficult to get up on your feet. EBT, takes too long to get on. If I get a job, I have to find something that pays daily, because I'm not sure who has the time to wait 2 weeks for a paycheck. And yes places do emergency housing and so on, but that can take months. It's 30 degrees outside today. And unless you are on your own, not married, no dog, a shelter is out.

This video seems like it has a lot of ignorant people in there. Food Bank buys food at very low prices. With $100, Food Bank can feed way more people than Supermarkets can. Would you rather donate $100 to "feed a friend" to feed 10 people for a week and leave the others hungry or feed 50 people a week? If people can get free food from a grocery store from "feed a friend", a lot of cheap/greedy people will start abusing that program. That's why Food Banks give food for survival. Tax payers don't want people to rely on food banks for food. People don't have to work a day when there's government housing, welfare, food stamps, and free food. While it does suck to get food from a food pantry, that's your wake up call to get your life together or stay like this for the rest of your life.

stelity a food bank wouldn't have to buy anything or spend money,,,if they had gardens and greenhouses and gave away fresh fruits and vegetables.... Crops are free,,,why look for low priced leftover Expired items in a grocery store ?,when you don't have to pay at all....these people do the stupidest things,,,,if they werent so busy trying to shyt the poor as if they don't deserve to eat right...if we weren't all competing with one another wealthy vs poor,,childish nonsense,,just treat everyone equally

Sounds more efficient than people buying canned goods etc. and leaving them in a donation bin at the front of the store. Painting food banks as some sort of right wing agenda seems a bit much, though. You can improve on something without being hyper-critical of the well-intentioned attempts you're trying to replace.

Governments should have security on these food banks somebody who is not corrupt or a criminal somebody who has been through the problems you have or had and investigate churches who are doing it because alot of them are lying to people and taking what they want themselves before others even get a chance and there are alot of secrets behind churches they don't tell you

Coupon advocates: what prevents recipients from turning around and turning their coupons into cash and buying booze with the cash? No, they won't get parity value for their coupons but they don't need to to undermine the coupon providers' intentions.

This is a really good example (4m:40s) of 'Charity model' (right wing agenda) versus 'Social justice' model. I like how the one man call out the CBC for promoting charity fund raising versus adequate income/food/housing as a civil rights issue.
