Native thornforests in Texas' Lower Rio Grande Valley are home to 530 species of birds and 300 species of butterfly. They're also the only habitat in the United States for the ocelot - an endangered, leopard-spotted cat. Less than 10% of these forests now remain. As climate change and suburban sprawl take their toll, the future of these landscapes hangs in the balance. American Forests' new drought resilience strategy aims to restore and conserve thornforests that can withstand a hotter, drier future.
