There was a kid called Tom in my media studies class that had Aspergers, and he'd developed an intense interest in a particular subject which is common with Autism/Aspergers. But unfortunately it was slasher horror films and gore, which didn't endear him to a lot of the kids in the class, especially as he would talk about the stuff in the same tone as that kid had. It was a shame because ultimately he was just misunderstood.

This story could be about our son; except his is Zombies and he’s overly hyper about it (he’s on spectrum). What makes it worse for him is that he’s never seen a real zombie film, he’s 12 now, and his obsession started with plants vs zombies. So to his mind, those cartoonish zombies are “zombies” but it comes off so strange to everyone else because we know what an actual zombie is, and it makes it hard for him to relate to people about it, because he’s turned off by people who like zombie films and doesn’t get why they would want to see something he’s heard described, that to him is horrifying, and nothing like his “real” zombies. Basically it’s a case of people misunderstand his interest and he can’t grasp why they do.

This was phenomenal. I just found it today… I will never forget the evening I spent with a young man at my sons school during a Halloween event a few years back. Without telling me, I knew he had some form of autism, and he was very intense like Henry describes that young man. We ran the ‘scary maze’ venue, and he helped me collect the money and make change. We got to talking and found out that we were both fans of Stephen King. I wish I was as well versed as he was on his books, so I could have kept up better, but I will never forget the connection I made with him. It really makes our lives so much better and more well-rounded when we open ourselves up to different types of people on this planet…

I can be. The thing about being an aspie is that you're kind of a half way point between all out autistic and a standard (boring) brain. Because of which we often can forget ourselves and can come across as being intense (or for a better term 'passionate' as my partner says). It's only after we look back at something that we can see it from someone else's perspective and realise that we may have come on a little strong. I meet some of my favourite musicians and actors from time to time and I've had to really prep myself beforehand because I don't want to make a bad first impression by coming on a little strong with them. It's taken a long time to get used to it, but as long as you make them smile then it's okay. :)

I wish he had mention who the guy was. He got my interest. Many great artists have mental disorders and are on the spectrum (I have a bipolar disorded but I wouldn’t call myself an artist). I love Rudimentary Peni and Nick Blinko’s art, I love Daniel Johnston, I love what they call outsider art in general because most of the time it seems more real and honest than something that’s mass produced. One of the most heartbreaking songs I’ve heard is Daniel Johnston’s Honey I Sure Miss You.
