Our today’s interviewee:
Wiesław Tokarczuk (born 1958), a retired forester. His relatives were saved from the Volhynia Massacre by the righteous Ukrainians who were awarded the Virtus et Fraternitas medal by the Pilecki Institute. Shortly before a Banderite attack on the village of Marcelówka [now Markelivka, Ukraine], his uncle Władysław Zaremba was warned by his Ukrainian neighbor, Tolko Giergiel, that the Poles would be murdered. Thanks to this warning, the Zaremba family managed to escape to Włodzimierz Wołyński [now Volodymyr-Volynsky, Ukraine]. The city was overcrowded with Poles who sought refuge there and were suffering from hunger. Wiesław Tokarczuk’s grandmother, Rozalia Zaremba, decided to go back to her house and bring some food. On her way there she was warned by Tolko Giergiel’s wife that the Banderites were waiting for her at the house. The Giergiel family saved the Zarembas twice.
Later on, Władysław Zaremba joined the Polish self-defense organization, which tried to fight the bands of Ukrainian nationalists. Carts transporting corpses of ruthlessly murdered Poles arrived in Włodzimierz Wołyński every day.
Wiesław Tokarczuk also recalls the story of the village of Mohylno, where the majority of the Polish inhabitants were murdered by their Ukrainian neighbors. There was, however, a righteous Ukrainian who saved his Polish acquaintances from the massacre. The massacres ceased when the Soviet Union took over these territories, as the Russians forbade the Ukrainians from attacking the Poles.
