HH has a Masterclass program that is much like this, only greatly expanded. Worth it. My hero. I could listen to him for days. Only three of the really great musicians have truly blown my mind and made me realize how much more there was to know than I'd ever imagined: Jimi, Miles, and Herbie. What HH says about 'mess around first' is exactly what I did as a writer. I consider that a smart move for any artist in any medium, as it well prepares you to understand whatever instruction you get later.

Great voices of music, agreed. Valuable and enduring additions to the exploration of music. For me, if pressed, my two selections of composers would be J.S.Bach and Charlie Parker.

Loved this. My wife wants me to teach our kids to play piano, but I want them to find that love and explore what they can do without any guidance. I'm waiting for them to ask me to start teaching them, but I enjoy watching and hearing them learning on their own.

Fazioli’s have a transient attack like no other piano. I’m not saying it’s the ultimate but it is unique and if you have ever played a well tuned Fazioli, you know the sound quality is impressive.

Thanks for the masterclass, Herbie Hancock Even for a non-pianist, just a mere string player, there are some fabulous pieces of inspiration in there ❤️ And hooray for the teachers which have inspired him in his early days! These memories are obviously still sticking around…. 🙏

9:02 Man, when he makes that pause, I KNEW that was a Chopin etude, because I was thinking how, when I learn the first, change my relationship with dynamics. Saying that, how weird was literally saying what I was thinking.

So Herbie what are you like saying is the difference between practicing and playing? Where do you draw that line?
@Bruce.-Wayne

I remember a piano teacher who said that you can't expect to play differently than you practice.

It's typical of these things. Maybe a few gems here and there, but don't expect a top-level musician of his stature to be as analytical in their teaching. They're usually well above that level of thinking, except for those that have teaching experience like the late Barry Harris, for example.
