Personality disorders, going based on the fact that they are a post traumatic response from childhood abuse and/or neglect, is the perfect crime that goes unnoticed until adulthood, if ever, and the abuser never pays a consequence for the child abuse they inflicted. We call CPS when a caregiver breaks a child’s bone, but no one can see when a caregiver “breaks” a child’s psyche into fragments. We need to do better by our children.
@ladybluelotus

Absolutely. People definitely need to do better by their children. Some parents are harming their children through a lack of knowledge. While others are deliberately trying to harm their children. Education can help the unintentional, but I'm not sure what could be done about the intentionally abusive because they hide it.

There are other situations that parents may be (ultimately) responsible for, but never understood. I’ve been blamed for soo very much that I couldn’t believe were the perception of my adult child. He calls me names like his “matron with Munchhausens”, etc, which has absolutely no basis in reality! I wonder how many kids were and are still damaged by daycare centers, whether emotionally neglectful or worse‽ I could feel my child tense up in my arms, every day I carried him into daycare, while I worked. I would find another place when I saw things I thought should be better, but never took into consideration that he was very sensitive, if nothing else, to so much noise and chaos in daycare situations. I hated having to put my kids in daycare during the times I had to, but pictured most of his time as playing and content with the other kids. My younger son would also have chosen to “stay home with mom”, but fared much better as the social butterfly he was. Young parents, beware. Kids in daycare spend an awful lot of time in that situation, to the point where it may be the majority of the influence in forming their personality. What we don’t realize when we’re young, will come back with a vengeance on us later.

I live in a small community where bpd is EXTREMELY over diagnosed. The amount of friends I’ve had who’ve talked to a psychiatrist for 10 minutes in the hospital, filled out a form and then left with a bpd diagnosis is absurd. These people then have to walk around for months being treated for a disorder they didn’t have until they could pay to see another psychiatrist who can reassess them and remove the diagnosis. The system is so flawed and doctors who over diagnose these things are why personality disorders (bpd especially) don’t get taken seriously.

I'm being trained as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, and I've been learning that personality disorders can definitely cluster in immediate families. Some argue it's purely genetic, but there's also a growing community of researchers (specifically focusing in interpersonal neurobiology, trauma, and developmental psychology) and mental health professionals that are seeing 'nature' (genetics) and nurture (environment and parenting) as much more interwoven than we used to think. I recently heard a specialist explain that, for humans, nurture IS nature, and how we are nurtured HUGELY impacts and shapes our nervous system development (especially our 'social' and 'safety' circuits--governed by our vagus nerve). Super interesting! I've found more information on these topics from reading about the Polyvagal Theory and Interpersonal Neurobiology, if you're interested in these topics too--you could look them up for more info! There are MANY books and research articles out there.(:

Does Insurances pay more for treating certain personality disorders? Will Insurance initially authorize longer term treatment? Without clinical lab work how can you rule-out substances impact? Based on what you just said, if someone is in treatment for a period of time and a separate or separate clinical conditions are being alleviated, and suddenly the patient no longer qualifies for a borderline personality disorder diagnosis, that would suggest that they were misdiagnosed in the first place. People do not lose personality disorders, so it would necessarily be an incorrect personality diagnosis. Other clinical / medical / neurological /acute or chronic diagnosed or un-diagnosed conditions missed should have been appropriately referred and followed-up on before a Personality Diagnosis is made, imo. Thus, a tentative personality diagnosis should be differentiated across other potential causes in other specialties before spending too much time treating a misdiagnosis. That could be malpractice.

I had been recommending buspirone which the psychiatrist fought me on like I was stupid. Well guess what she’s on buspirone. Now and it seems to be working somewhat. 🙏Thank you!!! I see it the following: A diagnosis to make a patient think or feel „that diagnosis is Me, it is WHO I AM“ is nothing more than a Business! A Diagnosis only should help to understand how the faculties Body, Brain, Mind, Consciousness function at any given moment in life. personality in terms of identification, can only give an outline which memories and experience runs that human being. Identity forming helps us to survive and that’s it. The Human is the only being, being able to consciously NOT to mate, NOT to react. Why can we see similar behaviours among groups of humans suffering from those distortions? Looks, responses, traits etc? The more we identify (yes, also the diagnostician), the more we need to survive something, and the less we participate in Life as life. One Question for MedCircle: What is your take on Mindfulness and actual Meditation and Yoga for people suffering in BPD, BP etc? 🙏

@@riekster6901 This is not nonsense. I am sorry if this triggered you. I am. And I am NOT against a diagnosis. But i am against fast diagnoses and how we treat patients, and in too many cases we have our patients identify with that diagnosis (talking now about europe) uppon those diagnoses. Aproper therapist will make sure you understand! the difference. A diagnosis helps you to understand yourself and give access to others understanding you and act compassionately. Thats what you want as well right? Understand yourself > be compassionate with yourself? But the past 18 years do not seem to you, a bit like business comes first? For whats worth: I am still waiting for my diagnosis (Aspergers), or maybe it will be something different. Whatever comes out of it, helps me explain situations in my past, and to be more aware of the future. But it is not ME.... anyway...We do not know each other enough to and this is online, not the right place for something so deep rooted... I found the discussion of the course (chronic sustained vs episodic nature) interesting as I've always considered classic bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and schizoaffective disorder to be the odd ones out for being episodic. However, if we look at the principal remaining (sustained) disorders, we have the anxiety disorders - which in some cases could likely be argued to represent an underlying anxious or phobic personality - then dysthymia, which, again, could be argued to represent a depressive personality, and then schizophrenia, which Theodore Millon, in his final book, classes as a more severe variant of the schizotypal personality type (and similarly gives the other structurally compromised personalities -phrenias: cyclophrenia for borderline, and paraphrenia for paranoid)

Some years ago, i met my brother's psychiatrist to discuss his treatment which was totally inappropriate and upsetting him hugely and I ended up losing my temper with her as her manner was so arrogant and she proved to be rather nasty to me also (not to mention how she treated my mother when she had expressed concern about the way my brother was treated).. anyway, some time later I sought help at the same institution for deep depression( i had no other choice but that same place) and who did I get only that same doctor.. she was very cold and condescending with me, obviously with a bad attitude to me from our last meeting i with me and after only two short interviews she diagnosed me with bpd. When I researched this disorder I found that while I did identify with some of the traits, there were quite a few that I didn't have at all, ever. I wasn't happy with the diagnosis and still don't consider it correct. I would know this no matter who had diagnosed it but feel that because it was given by her and I disagreed, she dug her heels in and refused to re-evaluate. Some time later I saw someone at another public psychiatric clinic ( I had to travel out of my immediate catchment area to do so) and I explained that the reason was that I couldn't get on with the previous doctor due to her treatment of my brother (who had since killed himself and her bullying played a huge part in this) and that I didn't agree with her diagnosis... they proceeded to give me another interview of less than half an hour and declared that I was indeed bpd like the previous psychiatric said. Is it possible they are correct or just lazy in going with the former diagnosis or was it that I got up their nose because I complained about another psychiatric doctor from a clinic closely linked to theirs and quite probably a personal acquaintance of theirs? How do I move on from here as I don't get on with my new doctor either ( she got very annoyed at me for complaining about medication prescribed and for challenging the diagnosis) I cannot afford to pay to see another one who is independent from these...
