Your analysis of the market situation is surly right, however, I think Honda hasn’t done anything wrong. The real issue is, that the world has turned crazy and we call a 110HP road bike “underpowered”. A motorcycle accelerating 0-60 in 3,5 seconds and having a top speed of 150 mph! People are told they need at least 140HP, if they don’t want to be treated as beginners, and the believe it. I had a CB1100XX back than (I ride bikes since over 30 years now) and I sold it after 1 year. Not because I have been scared or couldn’t handle it. I just discovered it’s an overkill. Way more than one would ever need on the road. I purchased a VFR. And it made me happy for 10 long years. What has changed since than? Just one thing: people understood the difference between “plenty” and “too much” a little bit better. If you need a steak, buy a steak, not a whole cow.

So true.I sold my VFR 750 and bought a blackbird cbr1100xx.It was great,but like you said,an overkill.I also found it top heavy,and from a handling point of view,doesn't come close to the VFR.Been looking at the ST1300,the VFR 1200.But I think I am going to find a clean VFR 800.I am 57,also been riding since a kid.The ST1100/or1300,to me is basically goldwing territory. The VFR 1200 is ok,but a bit pricy this side of the globe.Stay safe.Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦.

I have a 2014 VFR DLX, the awesome red color too. I bought it brand new, in crate, in 2016. Love the thing. Carve up turns just as good as anyone on anything else. In my 5 years of owning this bike I have noticed one thing: dudes notice bikes like the ninja 1000, chicks notice the VFR. The VFR just spills sophistication, no matter where it sits. Clean fairings, nice lines, and the paint pops in the sun. It may not have all the gadgets or all the power, but rollin slow gets the best results.

I bought one of these brand new in 2015 and sold last year for an MT09. VFR is a Beautiful looking bike , and absolutely loved the engine...BUT...so uncomfortable for a supposed "sports tourer", I added the bar risers, adjusted the seat, changed peg positions, and used a gel pad seat, still felt like I was being tortured after about 100km on straight roads...though if roads were twisty it was great :) quality of the build was second to none though. I did consider the ninja at the time I bought it, but I had always fancied owning a VFR, and it was way better looking than the ninja..IMO. :)

Doesn’t bother me. What I love about my VFR is it is absolutely elegant: smooth as glass, great trans and suspension and brakes, nice size tank and it just oozes quality. Dear Honda, your fans are waiting please make this VFR: - V4 w gear driven cams & 1000cc (you had the 1000 Intercepter, remember?) - 150hp+, under 500lbs, under $15K - single sided swingarm and rear seat cowl - modern electronics (TFT dash, 6axis IMU, Adj TC, ABS, cruise control, heated grips, quick shifter/blipper, LEDs) - fully adj QUALITY suspension (doesn't need electronic in year 1 but give us preload always and spring rates for western sizes) - optional integrated saddlebags, center stand, screens - take as many design cues from the '97 or the NR750 as possible I've owned a 2000 VFR and the 1200cc VFR. Each had pros/cons. I also did the adventure bike thing for sport touring (just like so many others did) by owning a Ducati Multistrada but always felt like I was on stilts and removed from the kind of sport touring that I prefer. I even tried the Ducati Supersport and it came close to the mark but the lack of power meant it wasn't a keeper. Anyway now I own a Ninja 1000 and will continue to do so until you build a desirable VFR again. Honda, BMW has been eating taking your sales in the sport touring space as well. Buyers are older, have the financial means, but are nostalgic and ripe for a return to the VFR if you build us the right one. This naked bike phase (like the adventure bike phase) will pass after everyone tries it and realizes that wind protection makes both track and travelling distances better. Anyway, I see that Ducati has just developed a new V4 engine with a 60K valve interval and 170hp that is planned for their new Multistrada. If Ducati revives/updates their ST or SS sport touring models with this new motor, then they might be building our new red VFR for you...

Excellent video as usual Hero. Having done a similar look through the VFR history and studying each model, the reason the latest VFR failed was simple, Honda had spent obscene amounts of money on the initial VFR models (SSA, Gear driven Cams, bullet proof V4 etc), and they simply had to breakeven. My guess is when they had done so, the VFR took the backseat to the benefit of other model.. innovation stopped and the 'cult' of the VFR came to a halt. Honda tried to correct trajectory with the 1200 but they simply overshot and brought something few wanted.. I just realised they have done the exact same thing they done with the new NSX. Everyone wanted the pure driving experience of the old one but more powerful, instead they brought this space age thing that was far too complicated and no one liked. Once the 1200 wasn't the success they wanted they didnt want to plow loads of money on the R&D of the newest VFR800, so it became just a styling exercise... and to wry the towel dry, they derived the models into Crosstourers and Crossrunners. I still do believe Honda will come back to its senses and bring back a worthy successor.

1200 was not success because it came out during the recession. It was an expensive bike and the only people willing to dish out $15 for a ST bike were elderly looking for a more comfy adventure-styles bike. 1200 is an awesome machine despite what the purist VFR guys say.

I went from Honda CBR500R, to Honda CBR650F, to Suzuki GSX-S1000F recently. I know you would expect the Suzuki to be the most well equipped, but it really is a bargain for what you pay. The gearbox blows away both of the hondas, the horn button isn't in a ridiculous position, and the stock exhaust is actually good. Based on my experiences, I can't really say Honda wins on fit and finish/details. From what I've heard the traction control on even the new CBR650R isn't that good, but so far I really like the Suzuki's 3 stage traction control. Suzuki is a better value since Honda is priced comparatively high for the performance you get.. Though full disclosure, my Honda models were used and the Suzuki new (new old stock).

The class became so competitive, they are just as expensive to build as 1000s already, so 1000s have all the cutting edge tech now and people intrested in buying such a bike get a 1000. There's too much to agree with/ debate here, but I will say that about 20 years ago most of us VFR fans worldwide were underwhelmed with the (then) new VTEC. This is not to say that the VTEC didn't become a thoroughly good bike; it's simply to say that what all us VFR nuts wanted and begged Honda for was a proper 90deg V4 of about 900-950cc, ~125bhp with all the mid-range shove in a package that was road-biased and about 210kg wet. If Honda had made something along those lines it would've walked out the door at top dollar. What we got instead was the VTEC and - many years later - an entirely unrelated 1200 that sold like tickets for the Titanic's return trip. In the absence of a properly modern VFR, Honda left the door open for Kawasaki, Yamaha et al. The year I was born, Honda was designing 250cc 16-valve inline-4 racebikes and making the C50 Cub for the masses: these days, its market is 125cc learner bikes. Soichiro must be spinning in his grave.

Got a vfr800 new in 2016, had it for 3 years, only have 2 complaints; it felt a bit too top heavy at times, especially with a full tank of fuel. An nc750s style underseat tank might solve that? On a long run i found it got too wristy and i'd start getting pins and needles in my hands and couldn't make it go away - there are bar risers, which may have fixed this. You could probably also get the higher bars from a crossrunner and fit those. Other than that, i absolutely loved it. The ninja might have more power, but it's not as if you ride around with your throttle pinned, and the sound the vfr makes is glorious. The stock end can is muted junk, i fitted a 300mm delkevic and removed the baffle tube, and it was so much better, it sounded like a mini nascar. It's worth having vtec just for the way the tone changes at 6500rpm, but it should be mentioned that the changes made after the old model weren't to improve power, they were (amongst other things) to smooth it out as lots of people complained that the changeover was too aggressive at times, especially if it was wet. It didn't seem to matter where i was going or what i was doing, 60mpg (UK) was typical. I don't understand the complaints about the traction control swapped it for a 2019 cb1000r, they''re so different that comparing them seems pointless. I absolutely love it, it feels easier to ride better, has all the things mentioned in this video that are meant to be better with the ninja - lighter, more power, less wristy - and yet thinking about it while typing this, my complaints list is actually longer. The extra poke never gets used, in 1st and 2nd gear all it would do is pick the front wheel up, when overtaking you're not increasing your speed by so much that you'd actually leave a vfr behind. smaller gas tank, worse economy. the cb never feels wristy, and is a lot more tippy, even with a full tank it isn't top heavy, and more manageable at walking speeds. tl;dr i'd give it higher bars, remove vtec, and lower the centre of gravity, instead of more power and a bigger (heavier) engine

Ok Boomer, you sound ignorant, millenial customers actually read and dont just buy Harley's because they have a "sweet flamed paint job" Millenials know about the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation VFRs and their gear driven cams, lack of garbage Vtec. No, Millennials are craving a new VFR, make it 1000, NO fucking Vtec, bring back the Gear driven camshafts, set it up on some CBR style adjustable inverted forks and rear shock. Obviously fuel injection with easily adjustable fuel trims. Keep the single sided swing arm, let it compete against the CBR, make it a V4 race bike NOT a touring bike, please !!! Sport tour's dont even want the VFR RACERS DO, we all want a V4 made by Honda with gear driven cams, we want an endurance race bike Honda !!!!

I honestly think VTEC is absolutely amazing on motorcycles. I mean it doesn't hurt your engine it just lets you ride around more fuel efficient which is great for a touring bike and the crossover sounds really good as well. So if they are ever going to build a new VFR it should have more power, weigh less, keep VTEC and better technology

RC51 chassis and handling + VFR V4 engine .... More bore, more stroke up to 1,000 or 1,200 cc possibly .... Gear driven cams ( maybe phasers instead of Vtec oil pressure system, or none at all ) with some newer tech and where it could shed some lbs without giving up any rigidity if at all possible. I highly doubt it would lower the cost withing range of the Ninja though, Honda is really good at making thing's that work well without being overboard

My 02 VFR brought me nothing but misery and heartache. It had the worst electrical system imaginable, and fried ECU's like it's no one's business. Sadly the 02 was my decision to take the plunge and gamble on another VFR because my first was the first generation VF750F. Yep that one chewed its camshafts in the first 6k miles, and those cams were aptly named the chocolate cams. Never again will I spend a dime on a Honda motorcycle.

I'm a lifelong VFR owner (RC36II) and it's sad to see (and say) the decline of this sports tourer compared to other models. I mean; forget this 7th Gen bike vs the Kwack, the 6th Gen lost out to the ST1050 for exactly the same reasons. Not enough power, too small and to add insult to injury, took away the GDC and put in VTEC. I'm sure VTEC is very good but that wasn't what VFR owners were asking for back in 2001 - it was 1000cc GDC V4. Honda had done this before - how much of a stretch was it to do it again. Ironically the V4 VTEC has been around longer than the GDC models now. Honda have killed the golden goose. I don't see them getting this share of the market back again anytime soon...

Good video HeroRR. I bought a 1996 RC36A VFR after watching your video about the history of the Honda VFR. Its a great bike but it doesn't make me feel as good as my old 06 Kawasaki Z750. Please do a video on the VFR 800 fi Anniversary model with the red and silver fairings. It's the most beautiful vfr and possibly the best vfr as well. I hope to get one at some stage.

I would have bought the VFR except it had a number of failings for me: 1. Seating position - I have a damaged shoulder from "an off" and can only ride it for about 30 minutes before my shoulder gives out 2. Fuel tank - it's way too small to be useful 3. Chain - It should have had a shaft 4. The panniers look like an afterthought. 5. Service interval (on the one I looked at) is too short

I believe BMW F800ST was BMW's answer to VFR in 2004, after VFR was named motorcycle of the year in 2003. F800 shared a lot of features, like similar layout, engine size, standard heated grips, self-canceling indicators, single swingarm and etc. The only thing BMW did good was the "low maintenance" belt drive, which in real life is NO maintenance whatsoever. Good for riding in the rain. However in reliability department BMW failed completely, with F800ST having major recall on whole rear wheel assembly, stator burning every 10-20K km and bunch of other issues. So, VFR is uniquely most reliable in its class and beyond it.

30 seconds in and I can tell you why it failed. Despite the shiny new bodywork it was still a 20 year old bike underneath at a $15,000 price tag. You could buy an Aprilia Tuono V4 with way more power, much better suspension, brakes and handling for the same price. My first bike was an 86 Interceptor I picked up in 1998. Currently have two Tuonos. An 03 Vtwin I bought fresh out of the crate and a 2012 V4 bought used in 2017. Though if I had the spare cash and could find one for sale I'd take a pre Vtech VFR 800 with the gear driven cams in a heartbeat. But those that have them are reluctant to part with them.

I rode both an picked up a new old stock 2014 VFR over the Kawi as a super deal. Other pros of the VFR are quality feel from the powertrain. Plenty of power for me to still get in trouble with, yet smoother than the Kawi, and a much better transmission IMO. Also the Deluxe VFR came with a standard center stand and the Kawi and new Suzuki are not available with one. I added risers and bags and the bike is darned near perfect. I just wish Honda would improve on the concept - bigger motor maintaining refinement, with added cruise control and world class handling.

Loved my 1998 VFR which I owned till 2016. Sadly the new one looks fabulous but is not comfy enough (I want it a fair bit more upright, and the 2014 is more sporty than mine, so less comfortable) and that lovely 781cc engine is down on torque. It has now been withdrawn in Europe anyway due to emissions regulations.

Totally agree! I have a 2014 model, it is a great bike but it really should have some more power and torque. A round 125bph would have been suitable. In fact it has nearly don't changed at all since 1986, 100 against 108bph like it has today (in Sweden)

I hate to admit - I agree with many of the points made. I bought a VFR750 new in 1989 and owned it until 2005. Best thing (of any kind) I ever had. This was my daily driver as well as fun sports / touring bike. The sound was (and still is) second to none, within its class it had amazing mid-range, and it was super reliable and easy to care for. Fast forward 30 years, and what they've done with it is, well, underwhelming. Sure, some modern amenities & nice improvements like the single-sided swing arm, fuel injection, ABS etc. But the admittedly still good engine? At the time there was a VF1000R . Why not marry the weight of the early VFR's with some of the modern touches, 1000cc with around 140hp. The VFR1200 addressed that but it was just way heavy, expensive and I don't like the way it looks at all. I think the regrettable VTEC is in part necessitated by emissions regulations but others get by without that, right? And the old gear driven cams, while adding cost also made for a part of the incomparable sound of the earlier VFRs. As it stands, I'm not sure what I'd buy (I may be in the market in the next years). Maybe a used pre-VTEC VFR. Maybe a cross-plane crankshaft Yamaha R1 which also has great sound. Not a Panigale because who has that kind of money? Maybe a Zero cycle, my neighbor has three different ones now and loves them, albeit no sound... It's 2020. I would love to reconnect with my first big motorcycle love, but it hasn't aged well...

I love my 2014 VFR, but have often wondered how much better it would be without VTEC. Less weight, less rotational mass, more linear output, 4 valve V4 sound ALL THE TIME. The downside... maybe a couple mpg less?

The thing I never understood was this: If you overlaid their silhouettes, the VFR1200 engine is actually smaller overall than the VFR800 engine. Take that 1200 engine, put it in the 6th-gen 800 bodywork (which I think is empirically better looking)... I'd buy that bike in a skinny minute.
@Limasenar

I also think the 7th gen divided and killed the VFR's segment with both the F and X models (Crosstourer in some markets). By the time Honda realized and got back into the 800 in '14, the market's already in a different ballgame. It's a shame to think that they could've competed with today's Ninja 1000SX, GSX-S1000 GT, and BMW's F800GT.

Even though they are both considered to be sport touring bikes,there is no comparison between those two.Buying the latest vfr,simply means that you pay for the v tec,the v4 and the single arm,all those in a more refined package.That being said the vfr 800 is a 7499 ccs or something and the z1000sx is 999cc,the cc gap justifies the hp gap within those two.The price and the fact that the engine remains almost the same are the down ones,thats true,but,thats honda,if something works fine,dont mess with it and if you cant afford it,oh well never mind.
@DonnyTrent5533

This bike needs to gain 20 horsepower and lose 10 kgs. Another problem is the fact that the previous generation models are so good and the new models so costly that nearly everyone who wants a VFR, either already has a VFR or can't afford one. Other than that we're good. But it has to be said that in Europe the VFR is still the class standard bearer mainly because it's easier to own and look at than it's competitors.
