Thank you so much for posting this! I just learned that my grandma used to make me hoe cakes. I had always wondered what they were and they were so delicious. I can still remember them and I’m 63 years old now I grew up in Southern California but she was from Georgia.

Thank you! I used to sit for a woman who made Johnny Cakes but I never knew how to make them. Now I do thanks to you! I also want to give the hot water cornbread a try too! She fried hers in bacon grease for added flavor!

Those hoecakes brought back memories of my granny. We'd have this with cracklings. ❤

That's how you make real hot water cornbread. That's all I use is corn meal and hot water. When I be seeing ppl adding eggs, sugar, milk etc... It threw me off. That's why it's call hot water cornbread cause all you need is hot water. Plus your salt 😊.

I've tried the yellow meal for my hot water cornbread but it did not work for me. I might try it again after seeing how yours turned out 😊.

My grandma would fry bacon cracklings and mix it in the hot water cornbread and then fry in bacon grease. I know I know heart attack on a plate. It was so good though😋

I just found your video tonight and would like to thank you. Thanks for posting the difference between a hoe cake and hot water corn bread. I have been trying to find a recipe of the bread we call Gorditas, that we eat with chicken soup or Caldo de rez. That's just been swapped for chicken. My mom is from Texas and since my grandmother passed away, no one in the family knew how to make it. The yellow corn meal was not doing it sweety. Now I can show my sister and cousins. Thanks again.😊

So simple, yet so delish! My two greases are bacon drippings, and un-salted clarified butter. I clarify it, 2 lbs at a time, pour it into a lined baking sheet, when hard, cut into pats, and keep it in the freezer. Thanks for the video. Now I got to get busy in my kitchen. Jon
