Also the driver side leather seat is tearing apart might be because is not fart proof leather... I should of bought the civic instead of this BMW.

I loved my BMWs. I had two of them. Both gorgeous. One was a 2002, my next was a 2011. I did eventually get to 100k on them both, but I will admit they did need a ton of upkeep. Repairs were expensive. And even with regular maintenance, both cars still had what I would call below average reliability compared to any other car I’ve owned-Lexus, Buick (which are always at the top of reliability rankings). I’d love to go back to a BMW, but I’m too concerned about overall reliability and cost. This video just confirmed it.

Been driving BMWs for 30 years! Of all those Beamers, one lost reverse in transmission and another had a radiator issue. BMW covered both. He talks about the plastic? What car in the 21st century doesn't have plastic parts? The answer, NONE! America should produce the best automobiles in the world, but we don't! Corporate greed has made sure of that. Ford has stopped production of all passenger vehicles except for the Mustang, I think that speaks volumes about American automobiles.

MrMINDFIRE I keep telling people that fixing your BMW yourself is ALWAYS the way to go when owning one. You cannot own a BMW and just drive it. A lot of people buy these cars, and look at it as another vehicle they're owning. They don't bother ever taking the time to try to mechanically learn their vehicle. Some people don't even open the hood during the time they own it NOT ONCE. If you're gonna' own any BMW, you have to make time to learn your vehicle, and do your research as much as you can. It's not something you can just blindly walk into without some knowledge about it. The reason they're such 'money pits' is because they just take them to the shop, and get charged out the wazoo for more than what it's worth because mechanics are trying to make cash at the end of the day. For paying someone two thousand dollars to fix your car is something you could've done for way under a thousand to buy the part and install it yourself for three hundred dollars or cheaper.

Other than an annual oil change using BMW oil and OEM air and cabin filters, I replaced the battery in 2018 and the tires at 22k miles. I did replace the OEM Bridgestone run flats with Michelin run flats, and I’m very happy with the wear and handling. I do have a noisy front brake pad (oh the horror) but I’ll replace the pads soon so no big deal. If this is the extent of my repairs for the next 37k miles; well, I’ll live with it. I’ve owned 7 BMW’s these past 24 years and can’t imagine driving anything else. I'm on my second 335 (an is this time). My first one I owned from 60k miles to 145k. In that time I didn't crack any wheels and the only expensive (above 1k repair) I had was replacing the clutch (which you'd have to do on any car in that time frame) I'm on year 3 of my newer 335is and I currently have a $1600 oil leak to repair) but that is the only non maintenance repair I've had to do in 3 years and I just hit 108k miles. People who think modern BMWs are expensive to maintain take their cars to the dealership and get robbed on repair costs. When usually a repair is as simple as a new sensor and an hour of your time or a $2000 repair bill from the stealership. Oh and both my 335's have been tuned to over 400hp without sacrificing any reliability. One more note, get rid of the runflats and put some good Michelin's on it, it's one of the best upgraded you can.

I’ve found that the majority of people who bash BMW’s have never owned a BMW, but I got the impression they wished they had.

I drive a 2008 528xi to work , it has 258,560 Kms and the acceleration is buttery smooth in-line 6 naturally aspirated.230 HP Like any imported card the parts are expensive, and most parts are plastic and prone to failing due to age and heat cycles. These engines run like very hot and the cooling system is one that you need to change if you want to keep this car🏎. The E60 is timeless and will keep it till I can still diy stuff. Changed the starter, replaced the coolant tank and pipes , other than regular maintenance. Oil change with full synthetic is not difficult but my independent garage charges me $50 labour plus I bring my own oil. The transmission oil was changed twice, first at 150,000 Kms and than at251,000 Kms. Love the auto 6 speed zf has been reliable if you take care of preventive maintenance. I have some tools, it helps. The biggest mistake bmw owners make is getting ripped off by dealers. We also have a 2008 Toyota Hylander with 290,581 Kms original miles. We have changed the water pump , plus the regular maintenance full synthetic. The moral of the story it is not a bmw it is toyota. BMW need regular preventive maintenance. if you a diy person then go and enjoy. Find a reliable independent like Scotty. Stay away from turbo charged engines.! Very nice !

I have an e46 325i with 155000 miles. Still love it. The key is to work on the car yourself and do your research on online forums before taking on a project; often you can save a lot of time and headaches by taking care of several items at the same time, such as doing the entire cooling system at once or replacing hoses/fixing vacuum leaks/cleaning the throttle body when you remove the intake manifold to replace the CCV system. Most of the aftermarket replacement parts are much cheaper than BMW parts and last a long time.

I've owned both a 2007 model of this car, 335i and modified crap out of it and push nearly 3x the factory boost pressure to it and I've not had any issues as a 3rd owner and 90k miles. It is an amazing car despite being one of the more notoriously unreliable engines. I had a crack on the end cap of the intercooler which I replaced with one with probably 3x the capacity and a waterpump crack. Plastic parts yes, but it wasn't all that expensive and for as hard driving and abusive I am to the car it stands up fine. Then I have a 2016 550xi M-sport package with an even more notoriously "bad" engine but it's not had a single issue aside from a plastic PCV hose crack over the turbo (yes plastic) but the engine puts out 450hp and I have a tune on it as well so it puts down 530whp. Rock solid so far out to 78k miles aside from that. Drive the piss out of that car too, it just wants to be driven that way.. Also probably why BMW drivers get such a bad rep... The cars always feel like they want to be thrashed*.. At least in the top end models and M cars. Repairs are expensive but to say they break all the time? That is a huge stretch.. Had plenty of other cars have just as many or more problems and a Toyota Avalon with a transmission go out as well as other stuff.. That was the most expensive car I had as far as repairs. *shrug* Cars that last forever tend to be pretty boring to drive because nothing on them is made for performance, but all about reliability and economy is my opinion so there is a tradeoff. Also getting dealer service is the part that is killer expensive with BMW's avoid that and find a specialist shop and you will do yourself more of a favor than you realize and get better service outside of warranty.

Super fun, clean, and very tuner friendly as I'm pushing 440HP with less than 5K in upgrades but there's so many weak points. The motor itself is forged and can handle big power but like Scotty said, it's all the cheap plastic garbage and hoses that hinder it.

I know someone with a 2008 BMW 330D convertible straight six Diesel, it has 19 inch alloys and the car has done 85,000 miles it has been a total nightmare for them. Spent £1200 replacing some sensors a taillight, has blown multiple tyres (they never get below 3mm before needing to be replaced due to puncture or dangerous defects). Tyres are £150-£250 depending on whether its a front or rear with the rear ones being more expensive and he has given on up buying premium ones so now fits budget tyres. Its also had £600 spent to simply replace an EGR valve and sensor, its developed an oil leak that has a quoted repair bill of over £500. The battery when it goes will cost far more than even a modern stop/start battery in todays cars because it has a bigger higher voltage battery for the electric hardtop roof which believe it or not has never gone wrong yet. All these issues have come in the space of 18 months too.

They're just like any car, I've owned an E60 2010, 100k miles on it, kept up with preventive maintenance on the usual things that go out, and it hasn't left me on the side of the road yet. The problem with BMWs is that they have a little more maintenance than people are used to (I know people who own chevies, drive them on one oil change for 40k miles, and it still runs like a beauty without any hiccups. If I did that to my car, I'd have to replace spark plugs within that time, the lack of clean oil would likely messup my VANOS system, botching the idle and low end, and god forbid I have something like FRAM in my oil filter, because that would already be disintegrated and all over my engine.) At 90k I just did some maintenance like coil packs, water pump, spark plugs (I shoulda done em at 80k tbh), fuel pump & filter (even though they're lifetime, I just like to be sure), and I'm gonna start gettin ready to replace my Cats and O2 sensors at 100k. They will treat you good as long as you treat them good. Most people abuse their cars anyways. I make sure to give her italian tune ups and slide small cameras in the cylinders to make sure everythings sound, and never really seen anything or had anything obviously bad, except for a VVL gasket leak, but it was a simple 8$ part and 15 minute at home install, and it even allowed me to get a good look inside the engine on top of it. Taking off the plastic takes like 5 minutes and it's easy to just leave off if I know I need to work on it again, removing a filter or two also isn't an issue and I would rather have efficient usage of the engine bay than a massive bay with next to nothing in it. It looks really nice, and if you're gonna complain about having to take off a screw or two, I'll do your job for you and gladly take it off if its such an issue lmao. Worked on vehicles that have lots of room and it's not really too much of a time saver, small v6 silverados and a 4 banger kia sorento, both let you see straight through to the floor but both also look disgusting and have some poor mounting on engine components. Never had an issue with mine, but the kia already needs new engine mounts and it's not even past the 50k mark yet. The thing cranks at almost a 45 degree angle and shook so much it tore off a CV clamp (Thing was a pain in itself, had lots of room to get to it but still took us over an hour to get everything aligned, greased, and correctly tightened) If you already abuse your car without treating it- don't own a bmw. Own something more reliable that can take hits. These cars are beautiful in performance, ride quality, and comfort, but it comes at increased cost and more time used in upkeep. I've owned the car for years and I don't see any good reason to get rid of it as of now, 10 years old but still roaring, driving, and makin me smile like a champ. It's the car that makes you look back when you leave, smile when you start it, stare out the window at work, makes it fun to waste gas just driving around (12 mpg when I'm drivin a lil too aggressive, but a good 21 on highway), and it's soo fun to just drop gears and let loose. It's comfortable for family, fast enough for the crazy people, and handles well for the sunday drivers. Nothing not to like besides the upkeep

1.You'll need to replace all seals around the engine as they're notorious for oil leaks as they age. 2.Around 150 000 km, you'll replace the electric water pump and thermostat, if you don't it'll fail after that and leave you stranded, if you're lucky enough not to overheat the engine. 3. Clean vanos solenoids and filters from time to time. 4. Running a run flat tyres, in order to bend /break original alloy, you'll need to hit it very, very hard, but in that case you'll probably damage any type of alloy. 5. Just change the oil in transmission snd those ZF units are bulletproof. 6. You'll replace spark plug coils and spark plugs after 100K. Two ways you can do this. DIY, or go to someone (dealership being the most expensive). I did all of this myself following youtube tutorials and there are many, many of those, explaining step by step. If you do this yourself, this car is gonna be cheaper for you to run (apart from fuel) then almost any other car you owned as those N52 and N54 engines and ZF transmissions are very reliable, provided you do what I said above.

Scotty I love your videos, I watch you all the time. But I will say that I have a 2006 BMW Z4 and I have had ZERO problems with it, really not one. 25mpg in Chicago and 30mpg on the highway. It's a ton of fun to drive and it really turns heads. But from one Niagara Falls born guy to another, keep making the videos I watch them pretty well every night!

My neighbour has a 3 series from 2013 and the valve broke at about 120.000 km. Repair was about 2000 € +. I called a friend of mine (a mechanic) and asked him about the problem my neighbour has. When I told him about the engine type, he said: "Well, yeah, a had a bunch of those with the same problem." So much for the german quality.

Bms are for people who knows about mechanic or for people who are willing to pay for repairs. I hope im the first kind. I think I know my 135i enough to dont waste too much money in it. Parts and information are everywhere. Im using it for 3 years and I cant be happier I love it. Of course I had a Celica also, i paid 4k for it, but when my transmisión broke I had to paid 4K to repair. (I didnt know the cost until the end of repair, the car dead in NY when I lived in VA, couldnt sell it) At the end cars are the same, if you take care of the car the car will last. I had bm 128i, 3 peugeots, Celica, ford, and my 135i is the best. I think Scotty needs a training about Marketing and consumer insights, most of purchases are irracional and are motivated by our feelings.

I’ve been a Porsche guy for most of the last 15 years, and I’ve owned BMWs for the last 18 years. Just bought one of these E90 335i sedans. He’s talking about poor fuel economy, yet I commute 130 miles round trip and knock down 29MPG. Again, all you need to know about this guy. All he does is bag on interesting performance cars while driving shitboxes.

I have 3 different BMW vehicles and have heard it all from others. Though I agree that they make way too many parts out of plastic and their replacement cost are if not more than metal equivalents made by other car companies, I must say that dealing with the dealerships is perhaps the worst part of owning a BMW. They are elitists who only work at a well branded establishment, yet their workmanship, attitude, and treatment are absolute garbage at a labour rate of 50% more than an average mechanic. My 328i has been a reliable machine that boasts enhanced safety in comparison to other manufacturers, and gas economy equal to my previous 4 cylinder Honda Accord. The engineering is typically ingenious, but not made with a service technician's mindset. My X6 has been the contrary to the 328i as far as reliability, but they are different vehicles so you cannot judge a brand by a one car. My 1967 R60/2 motorcycle is simple yet easy to work on and has the BMW quality the brand became known for. Conclusion: can't judge an entire brand by someone else's experience with a single vehicle, they have great engineering, they make expensive cheap quality plastic parts, and the service end of the dealerships are absolutely terrible, but aren't they all?

Not to hard to work on if you have mild mechanical skills. These cars are finicky at times but if maintained properly they are great cars. Any car can be bulletproof but if not taken care of probably won't last long.
