They cost as much as they do for one reason, and one reason alone: People pay it. There are myriad reasons _why_ people pay it, but in the end, if less people purchased their pens, the price would drop to an acceptable level where people would be willing to pay (basic supply and demand). That said, they make a great product. My friend bought a Montblanc Rollerball and when I tried it it felt like an extension of my hand. I think what did it is the refills are threaded at the rear and at the front, so the whole pen is stable with no slop.

Several things: Montblanc pens are like Harley Davidson today. More about the name than any thing else. The modern ones are middle of the road at best. Any plastic is a "resin." The "precious resin" myth started with a translation error. And the "classic design" was stolen from the Sheaffer's pen design of the 1950s. The Sheaffer's design was still under copyright then... And then the pens these folks are hawking aren't their design. They're a very common Hero conglomerate Chinese pen that regularly retail for under $5 USD. Nowhere near luxury.

The nib wrote very nicely for a completely stiff nib and nothing about the pen was in anyway remarkable. I notice that the rather flimsy plastic piston filling mechanism is being sold as a spare on eBay. I know of no other piston filling pen where this appears necessary. Pelikan, which are considerably cheaper also have a stiff nib, but their piston filling mechanism is metal. For the same money as a Montblanc a pen user could buy and Onoto, or U.K. Conway Stewart both handmade, both offering a personalised service (I telephoned them ans had some alterations done at no extra cost). Both of these U.K. brands use a mix of Bock, or Yowo nibs which are made to a much higher spec. than the standard. The nibs are exceptionally nice to write with. They have a little gentle give. @@kevinu.k.7042 Tell me that the 1xx and 2xx Montblanc are not copying the Parker 45. Or the LAMY 2000 isn't really just a pregnant, piston filler 45. Look at the Sheaffer's Craftsman. Same shape as the Meistersück line. Funny that they copy budget pens so often, and blatantly, yet if a Chinese pen copies a decades out of copyright design, people get up in arms.

@@paulherman5822 "Pregnant Piston filler." LOL Well, having spent my school years fighting the P. 45 nib, I would say the modern Lamy 2000 is rather superior in both feed and nib. But, didn't the L. 200 come out bout the same time? I take your point. re. copying. I see no similarity between the P. 45 and the Montblanc shapes and the nib and feed are wholly different. I have no interest in Chinese pens. Excepting the TWISBI's made there. And, perhaps the Parkers. The reviews seem to be not so positive regarding the nibs. Also, there is a danger that their volume of production with cheap labour could kill the Western Pen manufacturing Industry. But, that is a tricky area involving much politics.

@@haomingli6175How? Platinum and Sailors offer plenty of different colours and likited editions, while the Meisterstuck has been stuck with one colour for all of it’s life. Pilot keeps innovating with different shapes and mechanisms, pocket pens, Vacuums, line-variation ajuster, retractable, etc… Yet Mont Blanc has been stuck with the same piston mechanism for all of it’s life. All 3 manifacturers offer plenty of specialty nibs, softs, Musics, Zooms, UEFs, Falcons, heck Sailor even weilds nibs on top of other nibs (Naginata). Mont Blanc barely offers Obliques

Like someone else said in the comments, Montblanc is like the Rolex of pens. So even with all the expensive materials and labor, Montblanc can still markup their prices because they are a luxury brand

Pilot and sailor dominate at a fraction of the cost tbh… and forget the buzzwords, resin is just plastic and iridium is an industry standard for tipping material.

What resin ??? Its just injection moulded plastic named as precious resin. Good is just 0.8 gram which is about 10 dollars.

Most acrylic resin fountain pens are milled on a lathe not molded. Still, you're just buying a name. There are other "luxury" brands that are cheaper or have a better track record in terms of performance.

Looks like they are being called out for what they actually are - good quality but overpriced. For the Meisterstuck line, you can get as good if not better from Pilot or Sailor in all aspects. Production costs are probably 30% of their retail price.

@@ploopploopploopboop1887 Nope, just overpriced (Meisterstuck line). Not particularly difficult to make, not rare, no artisanal input. Just overpriced. Montblanc's limited edition lines - then an argument could be made for those (although subjectively many look hideous).

@@arnaupuig5097 For the Meisterstuck line - I suggest you inform yourself of how they are made before making public comments. Objectively - there is no justification for their price point apart from profit margins and market positioning. They are "good pens", but the pricing is high compared to as good or better from other pen manufacturers. It is amusing, to me, that you say I have no idea about fountain pens.
