Tesla will need another 8 trillion to catch up with the Ford and GM infrastructure to repair and maintain its vehicles reliably. Who know how to work on a Tesla.... maybe a thousand people? Who know how to work on Fords and Dodges and GM? maybe a couple hundred thousand people. EVgine as seen on KZitem, now has a all Electric Motor Assembly and battery pack that any OEM can use and it cost less than building a Tesla anything. Anyone can work on or maintain a EVgine system. Easy to install and easy to work on. I hope everyone can see this serious problem Tesla will have and Ford, Dodge and GM are catching up very quickly.

Nice story, but elon has said that the exoskeleton folding is actually cheaper than stamping because the machines that do the folding are way way cheaper than stamping machines. Less capital outlay means that they can reduce the price of the truck. Hence $40k entry level truck even though the body material is more expensive and they need more battery capacity
@TopCarsTV
4 жыл бұрын
Well, folding into this shape is cheaper, but anything more complex that would resemble the usual car designs would also make the machine more expensive too.
@bburton333
4 жыл бұрын
Due to this simplified manufacturing process and also not requiring painting, the assembly line will take up much less space, is less expensive due to folding instead of stamping and can likely be brought on line quicker. The design of the truck is a combination of optimizing manufacturing efficiency with the exoskeleton or monocoque frame that is very strong while reducing weight due to no heavy steel frame. These factors combined together is why Tesla believes it can sell the Cybertruck at a comparable price-point given the same features as an ICE pickup.

Two comments. One is the stainless is an unspecified alloy. It may be 301, 302, 304, etc. Tesla does not want to say, so they hide the last digit and called it 30X. It would not be pronounced "thirty-x" but rather as "three-o-x." Second, cars are made with an "exoskeleton" (called unibody or monocoque chassis if done the most extreme way) all of the time. They are normally stamped steel, and because they are curved and stamped, the steel only needs to be about 0.9mm thick to be rigid. Tesla could have done this, but it would need expensive tooling. Their genius was in thinking to use CNC laser cutters and bending machines so that no dedicated tooling would be needed. This saves tons of cash and lead time. Only problem is, flat metal is not stiff, so they had no choice but to make the metal 3x thicker than normal. So, the video said it backwards - the stamping is not skipped because the steel is too thick to be stamped but rather the steel is thick because they didn't want to have to stamp steel and had no choice but to use thicker steel. In any case, I like it because it adds security.

I remember chatting with this gal at work a few years back; I told her I had been at a new cafe and had spent there 2 or 3 hours, and all the music they were playing was new to me. I was still feeling glad the next day. She said "That's weird! If I go some place I want to hear songs that I know and love; --The Stones, etc." There you have it. Most people are like her; suckers for the familiar. I love the new, the creative, the iconoclastic.
I like both, New experiments and also old familiar stuff. I found same feeling whenever I head queen music or Ar Rahman. They sound weird at first, Then I fell addicting to it like this one: Bohamean Rhapsody: kzitem.info/news/bejne/x4Bv2Imwgn-UjYY

Scoring and bending panels is cheaper than using a press, not more expensive as you indicated. Presses are hugely expensive and require constant calibrations and adjustments. Check out Sandy Munro's analysis of how much cheaper it will be to build a Cybertruck over an F150 on his talk with autoline on youtube. Not painting it also leads to the kind of savings other manufacturers would kill for.

When vetted by experts, Tesla were ahead in pretty well all aspects of auto design except bodyshells, more expensive and less optimized than say Toyota, - so it looks like they've simplified the one thing that they need to be more efficient on - shell design

It’s actually very cheap to build the frame for the truck. Bending steel is fast and easy and it can be done from a single or maybe two or three sheets of steel all done by robots. One to plasma cut bending grooves and one to weld the bends strong.

4:34 proper pronunciation of 30X steel is "three hundred and X," not "thirty x." There are many variations in the mix of metals in the 300 series. For the 301 formula, it's pronounced "three hundred and one." 302 = "Three hundred and two." Etc. So just replace the number in the one's place with "X." Because 1) this formulation is similar to the 300 series but of SpaceX's own design, and because (2) the precise mix of which they're keeping a secret, hence 30X, "three hundred and X."

Wayne Munro from Munro and Associates makes a good case that cyber truck will be relatively low cost and easy to produce. The cyber truck should be much, much easier to produce at a much lower cost compared to the model 3 at least. I would imagine it would be much easier to automate building a box with straight edges rather than the composite structure of the model 3. So the exoskeleton type design might be quite a bit more pragmatic then your video suggests.

Everyone says the stainless steel has to be scored for folding. It does not and it really would not help. It will simply be folded. Job done. No groove to weaken it no additional cost.

Elon tweeted on November 24th. 'Even bending it requires a deep score on inside of bend, which is how the prototype was made.'
@Dave5843-d9m
4 жыл бұрын
@@TopCarsTV Fair comment. but how is the score made into a material that's really tough to machine? It work-hardens under the cutters blunting the cutting edges. A groove gives a sharp fold but a simple press brake gives a radiused fold which should be more suitable on a car body.
@TopCarsTV
4 жыл бұрын
Diamond saws car easily cut into steel, no matter how strong it is. As for strength of the bends, all you need is a small cut to guide the metal sheet along which line to bend. Yes, it remains the weakest point, but that can be offset with other points that are designed to fail first
