Hsjs Ndjs Just perfect?Rod bearing failures,subframe failures,shock mounts made of chalk add up to a terribly designed car.The design flaws were carried over to the e90,e92 m3s and the m5 and m6s.Makes me think that Bmw purposely sells flawed vehicles to flawed customers.

True, it has issues, quite anoying. But why do most real drivers love this car so much? There is more to a car then only some issue and design blabla. Some cars just have certain emotion and feeling to it which isn’t explainable. In that way, Yes..the E46 M3 is perfect. But not for everybody, which is fine of course.😌👌

Here we go! Being an owner of a 2004 M3 myself... bought at approx 100k miles, approaching 120k very soon!! You can buy one used for pretty cheap, given alot of miles. With some TLC, she's totally worth all the money, blood, sweat, and tears! I still love this car to death compared to the newest M3... I'd rather take an M2 or 1SM over the new M3, seriously! Most major mistake of the S54/S65... BMW did not design enough clearance between the rod bearings and journals. Long story short - if you own an E46 M3, replace your OEM bearings (when the time comes) with BE high performance bearings, which have specifically been designed with greater clearance between the journal and bearing. Then use Liquimoly's MoS2 or CeraTec to protect those new bearings thereafter!! Used to want to go the WPC treated OEM bearings, but what good will that do if the bearing clearance is still that of OEM? Perhaps might be okay if you use the MoS2 or CeraTec, but I would still go with BE for the extra clearance! Another HUGE failure of the E46 chassis itself, particularly on E46 M3... don't forget to address the RACP mounting points, along with the various defective spot welds, hairline cracks, etc throughout the underside (needs completely degreased to see the full damage!)... doesn't stop there! Interior back seats and trunk must be stripped to check the various panel spot welds, and to cut inside the back seat paneling where the MIG welds are for the front mounts. Once these are all properly repaired, then comes the time to reinforce the rear subframe mounting points with plates (I recommend Redish V2 plates kit). Alot of bushings throughout the car should be replaced with poly (or OEM rubber if you want more cushiony, stocky feel) to extend life of the suspension setup. I recommend a total front and rear suspension refresh with aftermarket, performance-oriented parts. I have H&R springs, sway bars, Bilstein B6 shocks (coilovers to come later if needed), adjustable front and rear end links, control arms, RTAB renewal kit, etc. The rear toe (primarily via the RTAB) needs to be fine-tuned properly with new parts so you don't achieve too much instability under heavy acceleration. Rebuild your Dual VANOS unit ASAP (this should be done first & foremost on any affected BMW engine) - including the splined shafts for excessive play/rattling, and the timing chain plastic rail guide (mine was snapped, broken for who knows how long!!), all the seals, gaskets, etc. that use Viton instead of the defective Buna material that cannot handle the extreme temperature fluctuations over time. Get that modified oil pump disk so you don't have to worry about the exhaust hub driver tabs breaking!! Hardest part is restoring the timing if you didn't mark your original timing setup.. if you need help on finding the sweet tooth, PM me!! If you own SMG, you must install the newer hydraulic pump electric motor, which can handle the stress of high heat due to the location, and extreme temperature changes, or relocate the entire pump assembly altogether. If you're really ballsy, convert the damn thing over to 6SM and make it very simple (although not the best track setup if you're trying to make personal bests, etc). Finally, visit your dealership ONLY to get the defective Takata airbag inflators replaced ASAP!! This car is an absolute money pit. Be absolutely prepared. But, goddamnit, is it worth it!!!! :D ///M FTW

Fiat Lux I have an 04 too.Everything you mentioned happened to mine and will happen to every e46 m3 and most of the e90 92 m3s,m5 m6s.I should have purchased a c5 Z06.Much faster more reliable at about the same price.I have buddies that have 120,000 hard mls on their Z06s and they still run strong without rebuilding the whole car.My m3 needed a engine rebuild at 107,000 mls.The germans make things so complicated that they're just not reliable.

I have an 06, I had the vanos replaced at 64k miles under warranty, did the rod bearings 2 years ago (which was actually cheap, only like $1800, whereas new tires ran over $2000), but everything else I've fixed in my 8 years of ownership has been minor. I bought the car in mint condition and I've kept up with all maintenance, and I'd say it's a good $2000 a year once the car gets older. But the engine is solid, it can last forever.
@fiatlux4265

@@realisrealite5554 It will definitely feel like no end to the problems.. but if we think about it, it's eventual with all cars with high mileage. Think if we picked these E46 M3s up with 5k miles or less on them.. it would be a much different story.. I bought mine at 110k already put on the entire car, knowing I'd be in for an adventure. Never did I realize how crazy that was going to be, but.. those that are willing to put in the TLC to replace all worn, old with new aftermarket/high performance, shall be very rewarded. Totally understand if you wish to rid of the nightmare though, it's definitely not for everyone, you've got to have the bravery/ambition, time, and pocket if you pick one of these up, typically at high miles. Alas, there's just something about the way this particular car drives, ESPEC. after all the upgrades/mods done on her so far, won't be able to get the same feeling & experience even from new BMW's lineup of M2, M3, M4... they are powered by the N55/S55/etc lineup.. super fun, I'm sure! But still not the same feeling as the S54, its really such a unique engine! Which is why I continue to invest and will keep her! Btw - loved ECS Tuning's sale on the Conforti shark injector chip tune for the S54 over the holiday season.. picked it up for ~$100 when typically goes for over $300? Torque curve definitely smoothened out & power delivery even sharper now w/ the intake & exhaust mods!
@fiatlux4265
5 жыл бұрын
@Gennady Fortuna If you get all of this done at dealer, yes, it can total tens of thousands. If you can perform some of the work on your own, like suspension refresh, VANOS unit rebuild (Beisan systems), I highly recommend to. It shaves off $1k here, $1k there. Eventually, you'll end up paying a few thou on the much larger, most advanced repairs, but will be worth every penny especially if you get it done right by a reputable indie shop that specializes working on BMW, specifically Motorsport-class or spec engines like the S54 (head gasket replacement; get it torque blocked & go with cut ring/copper gasket from maximumpsi.com, MLS can & will tear if u don't get ur head machined properly & torque plated, rod bearings, rear & even front subframe reinforcement). My total $ spent on externalized labor for all work done on my M3 has been approx $3k; approx $2.5k of that was on total front & rear suspension refresh & camber/toe custom tune w/ steering alignment. New Bilstein B6 F&R shocks w/ reinforcement plates, H&R F&R springs and sway bars, poly F&R adj control arms, adj end links, tie rods, RTABs w/ limiters, poly subframe mount bushings, poly diff front mount pos bushing, new rear diff case cover w/ OE bushings & Castrol full synth fluid flush, poly engine & trans mounts, solid alum. steering coupler & redline power steering fluid flush; all supension parts combined approx $3-4k. You would not believe the difference in feeling of the overall drive.. it's absolutely DAY & NIGHT, even if the car was brand new OEM!! Considering I bought the car used at 110k miles already on entire vehicle for ~$9k, and have spent approx $6-7k in parts + labor combined to bring the car up to how it stands now, having saved approx $1k+ on doing complete VANOS rebuild on my own, and approx ~$500+ labor savings in other misc smaller repairs, and another $500+ labor savings in performance upgrades (intake/exhaust mods, shark injector tuning, etc), I'd say ~$15k total spent or so for an in-progress restoring 2004 M3 that can now do 0-60mph in approx 4.6-4.7s, ~80-100lbs in weight savings, makes ~360bhp with NO turbo, insane throttle response, raw power delivery, and soon over the next year or so with additional $3-5k in parts/labor combined, will have such better head gasket, rod bearing, and cooling solutions set in place, she's ready to be supercharged easily in range of 400-500bhp (reaching 4s 0-60) on OEM pistons/rings, no additional machining performed on the engine, if wanted. That's not bad at all! Otherwise, leave as stock NA, get entire exhaust setup custom rebuilt, more aggressive cams + custom tune, redo fuel system, perhaps eliminate VANOS unit, maybe stroker kit if you're really crazy.. I think keeping it right under 400bhp N/A is pretty Fing impressive for a 3.2L... one of the best I6 motors ever built, seriously!

Totally agree about your comment with the fake M3s... I actually used to own a 1999 323iS that came with a mix of E36 M3 parts from previous owner; the steering wheel, the rear diffuser, the M3 badge on the trunk, on the dash, etc. I eventually took off all these things (except the steering wheel hehe) and restored it back to near OEM as a 323iS coupe, because I knew it wasn't the real deal, and should remain as its original, intended design. Then finally came the day I drove the E46 M3 off the lot back to my home... that was the most exciting time of my life, next to meeting the most wonderful woman of my life! There isn't a single day that goes by where I'm not continually reminded of how awesome it is to own and drive the real thing. Finally! A true M3... perhaps the last real one. Come on, BMW, you can do SO MUCH BETTER than the B.S. new M3 right now. Do it right this time, PLEASE! ;) Or let's just go for M2 or 1SM? LOL

I test drove three different E92 M3s here in Sydney assuming that was the car for me but it just did not feel right - bit too big, bit too soft etc. I ended up test driving an E46 M3 for something different and loved it. I dropped the clutch and it roared into life and went sideways in a great controllable drift. I was sold on going for the older generation M3 there and then and bought it (back in 2016). I'd agree with your view of it being a great all round package - looks, performance, fun etc and its definitely raw. I would recommend a short shift kit for these as it will improve the gearbox feel dramatically. All hail the E46 M3!

No worries! I'm really geeky when it comes to that V8 engine because even if it doesn't have much torque, it sounds sensational. I watched your 997.1 GT3RS video and saw how passionate you are about the car - would you take that over a 991.2 GT3 with a manual?

smilepermile Haha, no wonder! That engine is great👌 Good question! No. Not an easy choice, but I would take the 991.2 GT3 manual over the 997.1 GT3 RS. That car is just perfection, even though in my opinion it misses a bit of the old school rawness. I haven’t driven that manual though, only the 991.1 GT3, so PDK. I can only imagine how sweet the manual is.

i opted for an smg simply because of the money i saved over a manual and it was the best condition low km car i could find. the smg is actually a lot of fun, to me its the next best thing to a manual because you do need to put in some effort in to make it work good. dont get me wrong ill take a manual all day long over it, but for the money you save you really cant go wrong. i also understand the hate for it. if you drive it once you are going to hate it. when i first got it i had some buyers remorse because i just couldnt get it to do what i wanted, took me about a month or 2 to get really good with it. i have had it 6 years now and the car has been amazing, still puts a big grin on my face every time i drive it.

I guess I'm a bit obsessed with them 😄. All of them are SMG's though. I personally love the gearbox with the CSL software. I guess as a daily and stuck in traffic it's not the best gearbox out there but I use my M3s as a fun/weekend car, I love the gear changes when you give it some. They have their problems but the again what car doesn't! Definitely an iconic car and a future classic for sure!

I agree in your point about manual transmission in every car with power, like a Ferrari you mentioned. Certainly, more fun to drive, more challenging, total control of your car. More challenge means that you will get more experience on your driving and in the end you will be better at driving. In the end you will be more careful and have respect over your car. Now days you will see more and more inexperience rich kids (aka Monaco kids) driving powered cars like Ferrari, Lambo etc and they don't even know what is heel and toe, throttle blipping etc

The stiff shifting is definitely attributed to this specific Getrag gearbox. I've driven 330's with the ZF 6-speed and it's buttery smooth. I think I remember reading that the driver's side air vent is used for DME cooling, so they're not totally fake.

Smells Like GASOLINE Yes, it only changes the throttle response (not the weight of the steering...that I know of..?!😯). Yes, normal traffic driving it’s to sensitive, but driving on the limit and/or on track I find it perfect.👌

It's carbon black! The E93 is still in my mind, but I'm not sure it would worth to buy the V8 and sell the E46. If you do the review, please try to make a dragrace too, as there aren't many videos on youtube, showing the difference. Thanks for the good content :)
@PureDriveTV

Csaba S Hard for me to say if you should or shouldn’t buy the E93. Of course they’re great cars, but it’s a personal (and not an easy) choice to swap it with your E46, nobody can make that decision for you.😉 Can’t promise the drag race since it won’t be a “E46 vs E92” video so I don’t think the E46 will be in there, only the E92. Of course I will mention and compare the E46 a bit in my talk.

I have a e46 m3 vert smg and a dct e93 m3 , if I had to do it all over id get rid of both and get the f80 m3 or f82 m4 because of tuning options and you'll still be king of the road, vs having the beautiful sounds of the N/A engine but feeling inferior against the new developments of all the new car manufactors

Yup, I have a stock E46 M3 here (had rear subframe reinforced & the beisan vanos replacement done, among a bunch of other work including a complete suspension overhaul). I'm about to get the rod bearings replaced as well as preventative maintenance. I came real close to getting an M2 competition, but something made me stop and just keep it. It's too perfect of a car for me. I would like to make the car more modern with something like Apple Play (currently have the clunky NAV unit which I don't use). It has been my daily driver for ~11 years now. She has 102k miles on her right now.

I am with you. BMW's greatest hit was and will remain the six cylinder, just as true as V8 for american muscle cars, and V12 for Lamborghini and Ferrari. I cannot imagine a six cylinder Ferrari or vette. So the E92's V8 is a odd BMW. I love and own a E46 black manual vert M3, together with my daily 320ci vert E46. I would not part with any of them, as to me the E46 is what in my mind consider the perfect car. To me every little detail or emotion experienced in an M3 is that much better, and for all those complaining about rod bearings, it is an M3, all high performance cars come with their fair share of expensive maintainance. If you buy a motorsport derived car, be it BMW, Merc, Ferrari aso, you buy into its particular mantaince regim.(Next they will be complaining about mpg (in an e46 M3 it is Smiles per galon btw😉)). Don't expect it to be as cheap to run as your grandma's corolla. Even formula one engines wear out pretty quick due to the power output they produce. If you cannot deal with that get a corolla. One last note to the comments about the first NA engine over 100hp is the B16.. really.. have you ever heard about motorcycle engines?100hp on a 1000cc bike is a puny figure. Nice content and good car choice btw.😉

Happy Memorial Day from the Midwest USA, back again lol.. just read thru my initial comment XD.. ended up doing a complete engine rebuild on my 04 right after leaving that comment.. learned a lot more obviously since then! Owners, IMO it would be wise to make Beisan System's revised/updated timing chain tensioner guide rail a top priority to implement.. it wasn't available when I left my initial long ass comment. I could see light signs of wear already starting on my previous replacement of this part, having only approx 10k miles on it! The revised version should last much longer, might only need to change it every 200k miles or perhaps longer? Time will tell. More on the rebuild, found my crankshaft a bit off balance from the factory, had it re-balanced & micro-polished at the machine shop. To strengthen the car to reliably handle upwards of 450-500hp down the road without having to teardown/rebuild every 100k miles, I chose JE FSR 11.5:1 CR 87.5mm oversized pistons (block was bored 0.5mm over stock diam. - effective displacement now ~3.3L, honed w/ torque plate & plateau brushed to extend piston ring life on initial start) w/ Molnar Billet H-beam lightweight 4340 rods (faster crank rev), King Racing XP series main & rod bearings (I know.. praised the hell outta and still do, BE bearings for added clearance, but King Racing to me are best price for what you're getting). As you can see, I tried to aim for a more budget-focused build; additionally could've went SP or Carrillo rods or Wiseco pistons, etc etc, but as yet another example to the budget build notion, decided to opt for Molnar Tech (Tom Molnar is reputable in the racing & conrod industries) which offers very affordable, lightweight (approx 100g lighter than stock per rod!) billet H-beam rods of 4340 steel for this motor; yes, the price cut in comparison to more expensive brands largely comes from the sourcing of steel is overseas, but otherwise finished in Kentwood, Michigan, USA. It's a feel good bonus knowing you're supporting a domestic, smaller company, in exchange of them being able to bring to market very affordable, high quality rods that stand up to the same performance as the pricier competition, & especially by a company that first specialized in making rods for big American V8 big blocks, I think they can handle the much more compact design of the S54 spec rods just fine :) Hell, you're able to talk to the owner of the company anytime, he's very helpful & friendly guy. Other notices along the way.. rod and piston balancing is obviously very important for a smooth running motor. Stock rods on the S54 are balanced +/- 4g of each other. Stock pistons are a little less in variance. Contrary to what many will say, if the rods & pistons are within a couple grams, all is good. Some folks advocate for balancing within 0.1g, but that to me is unrealistic expectations; 1 gram is roughly the weight of a dollar bill, think about that for a moment. What's more important is that the crankshaft be balanced equal on each end, this is key. Another random note, when reinstalling the oil galley plugs, I found that freezing them with dry ice prior to install helps them shrink, to tap in easier. I used a socket that fit flush over the block surface & plug face.. too bad BMW didn't opt for threaded plugs, but with them pressed in & coated with some high temp thread locker, should hold up just fine. I'm sad to not have the patience to do a proper head polish job for increased flow, just too eager to get it back together lol Seems there is some advocacy for using fine grained sandpaper to very lightly remove potential sharp edges that may exist on the crown of new aftermarket pistons for this motor, particularly the JE FSRs. It is said these can produce hot spots. While these JEs have a chamfer on the general edging of the valve relief grooves, and crown edging, certain points to which edges match up may want to have an ever so light radius put in to simply remove the sharp edge. It's also worth noting the S54 uses oil squirters to help cool the pistons under operation, which seem to do an adequate job overall. Bunch of other upgrades going in also; entire cooling system replaced. Mishimoto aftermarket aluminum radiator + upgraded oil cooler + electric radiator fan w/ NPT, new water pump w/ metal impeller, silicone hoses & screw clamps, etc. Entire exhaust system replaced; Megan Racing catless tubular headers (budget build, these are best value), Status Gruppe sec 1 rasp eliminators + sec 2 unresonated X-pipe + DNA motoring muffler (neighbors will eternally hate me lol).. debating about trying out the eBay NPBoosted solid intake manifold/plenum, but unsure if it'll fit with a Stage 2 aFe intake kit, and not sure if I can justify the cost & use of it vs just putting toward the eventual supercharger conversion down the road... as you can see, mine is heavily modified. We haven't gotten to suspension & drivetrain, electrical, list goes on & on. Purists will hate me, but to experience the sheer exhilaration from this setup in its totality.. speechless. Anyway, enough rambling.. as you can see, I am one of many that are totally obsessed with this car. ///M Power for life, Happy driving! :)

@@PureDriveTV pretty sure the b16 didn't break 100hp/liter until 96 with a later revision. As far as I know BMW had the first production motor's over 100hp/ liter in 1995 with the s50b32 in the 36 m3 evo and the v12 version McLaren f1.

weedshoes That’s what I thought for a little while. But then I found out about the B16A engine from 1989. Apparently the 1.595 cc engine produced 160 bhp. So just over 100 bhp per liter. Let me know if this isn’t correct somehow. Thanks!

Vasiu Cristian Last thing I would ever be is a “hater”. I respect every carlover with whichever car, whichever mods somebody drives. But I do have an opinion about “fake” cars. If you have a 320 with M package, that’s really nice.👌 But there is a huge difference between M package and a 320 with the “M3” badge on the back, and the 4 pipes etc. The M package just makes a 320 look nicer. A “fake” M3 makes it look like it’s trying to be something it isn’t. In my opinion that doesn’t look good.
