it’s not wrong. when you slice straight down it’s because the incoming ball already has plenty of pace. following through forward is when it can’t clear the net on its own. it’s easier to miss when you don’t carry the ball. you need to have very good touch and read the ball well

Feds racquet has a ton of swingweight on it (more so than any recreational racquet out there). Not only that, his slice requires weight of pace so your opponent also needs to give you a heavy ball. Doing this recreationally leads to short floaters for most people when they try to copy it.

The RF slice is one of the defining shots of a generation. As a hardcore RF fan, I’ve modelled my slice to be like his and everyone I play with/against says jokingly “you must be mates with RF himself to have a slice like that” which I am quite modest about, as no one is close to as good as the Maestro. I personally think I hit the slice exactly like Federer. But of course this is from watching and studying him over countless hours of content. It’s quite literally an up-to-down motion but more diagonal. When you hit it right, the ball has an almost horizontal trajectory and is a nightmare for most recreational players to deal with.

I don't know what Mouratoglou is thinking, but plenty of players other than Roger slice across the ball and follow through down by their side - Dimitrov, Murray, Wawrinka.... a lot of players will only hit a slice if the ball is at their knees, and if you are hitting a low slice then you need a more forward follow through, but if you're hitting a slice from the hip to chest range then the way Roger does it is the way to do it, especially on a ball coming at pace. I've been hitting my slice that way since I was 12 before I even knew who Roger was because it allowed me to generate pace and keep the ball low.
