I stopped using room, correction software and my mix started getting much better translation.
EQ cannot magically fix major frequency response in acoustic issues in your room. It can help reduce them, but only up to a certain point.
The trade-off when you start doing a lot of correctional EQ on your speakers is the music will start to feel unnatural and the character of your speakers will be lost. We spent all this money getting really nice speakers we love, why change the character of them with EQ?
We must not forget that EQ also introduces phase distortion. And while room correction software has linear phase algorithms to combat this, they also mention that when you use these algorithms that can cause pre-ringing and artifacts.
If you have a dip in your room at let’s say, 80 hertz, EQ is not going to magically get rid of that issue. That issue will still be there no matter how much you boost 80 hertz. You can’t beat physics.
Here are some options to help you get translation without obliterating your speakers with EQ:
1. Acoustically treat your room. There are a lot of good resources on how to do this on KZitem.
2. Use a great pair of open back headphones. Open back headphones allow sound to escape without reflecting within the headphones. Because of this, you get a much more accurate representation of your mix, you can still use your speakers, but use your headphones as a reference, especially for low end.
3. Use a software like audio movers which lets you stream audio to different devices, like AirPods, phones, cars. This will allow you to make sure that your mix sounds good everywhere.
4. There is no substitute for learning, your speakers and your room, and the way they interact with each other. This just takes time, tons of listening and tons of practice. However, once you learn this skill, you’ll be able to mix anywhere.
