I think it's good to drop a number rating system. I'd much rather listen to someone's reasoning for liking/disliking a film than being given a number. I liked this film a lot, gave me a lot of David Lynch vibes. I will have to see it a second time because I'm sure I missed lots of small details.

grvonny Back in the day it was more appreciated, however, in today’s society we are so used to instant gratification with modern blockbusters that we are forgetting what movies used to be like. I admire A24 for giving films like Hereditary, The Witch, It Comes at Night, exc a platform to showcase their interesting and unique stories. Hopefully as time goes by more films like this will be financed so eventually audiences will just have to adjust themselves to the new norm.

You could literally feel the spirit get sucked out of each audience member. There was a cold draft that swept through the theater during that scene and it unsettled me so much. Imo the trailer doesn't show anything at all? It was completely misleading (in the best way possible) and I would have never anticipated the direction the film went in. This is coming from someone who watched the trailer every day the first month it came out. There IS one scene in the trailer that gives something away, but it doesn't detract from the intensity of the scene.

I *really* want to watch this but all the commentary I've seen has me questioning whether I'll be able to handle it, and I say that as someone who generally prefers psychological terror over mindless gore. There's a lot of hype surrounding it and the last time that happened with a horror movie, It Follows, and I watched it I was incredibly underwhelmed. However, I've been a long time fan of Toni Collette so that alone is motivation to go watch it. Now, I just have to wait for it to open here.

I really want to check this out, but I'm such a wuss when it comes to horror films! I really want to try and get into the genre though. I can handle stuff like Get Out and It, but that's basically all I've seen in terms of recent horror. Do you recommend any other films in a similar vein, to help me build up my scare tolerance? I know about movies like the Witch and It follows, but I'm so hesitant to give it a go. Maybe I just have to bite the bullet and just dive headfirst into the genre but would love to get your opinion on it.
@BreakingBanter
6 жыл бұрын
To be honest, a high sensitivity to horror is something to cherish. I'm really desensitized to it now because of how many I've seen and how well I read the language of a scare, so you should cherish getting scared easily! This is just as much a drama as a horror but it's very different. Give it a try I say! It's worth checking out the Conjuring films, The Shining and A Quiet Place as some good gateway entries into the genre.
@calebc7858

Caleb Canagasingham If you think you want to give this movie a try. I would suggest that this is the one you should go to. I would call this more of drama with horror mixed in. The reason that people seem to love this movie is because of it is a great story not so much the horror. It is not terrifying like the exorcist It is just a feeling of dread. If you want to love a horror movie this is it. I went back to see it again. Loved it.

@cjlaity1
6 жыл бұрын
Of course it's subjective. How can an opinion be anything but subjective? There are two ways you can look at this film. You can look at it like Rosemary's Baby and trust that all the supernatural stuff is real, or you can look at it like William Friedkin's BUG and trust that it's all a collective delusion created in the minds of some extremely mentally ill people. I lean toward the second interpretation, but IF this film chose one or the other of these, it would have truly been a horrifying experience. Since it exists ambiguously somewhere in the middle, I never felt myself grounded in the reality of it. I spent more time wondering what the hell was going on and that distracted me from being engaged in whatever outcome it was leading too. Plus, it just needed editing. It didn't need to be over two hours long. There were scenes that dragged on way longer than they should have and there were at least three times where the characters verbally describe something that we just witnessed moments ago. They kill off the creepiest character (the daughter) early in the film and then focus on the most underdeveloped character (and worst acted one as well--the son) for the majority of the second part of the film. I really didn't like the son. He was a whiny crybaby most of the time. And did you really buy the whole accident thing? If we're to believe that the cult was responsible for the daughter's death, that would mean they would have to have invited the son to the party, made sure he left the daughter alone so he could smoke some pot, made sure there was chocolate cake with nuts available for her to eat, made sure he attempted to drive her to the hospital rather than just calling a freakin ambulance, made sure she stuck her head out the car window, made sure there was a dead deer in the road at the exact point where a light pole was . . . that was so convoluted I think it was that point when I started losing my suspension of disbelief.

This movie was pretty ordinary, it was predictable aka fathers reaction to mother, the worst fake crying by the son and 50 minutes of a dull, slow unfolding storyline with moody music suggesting something was about to happen and wow was that all moments. 5/10 wait for it to hit Netflix, Stan etc a pretty disappointing effort.
