Advaita Ashrama was started by Swami Vivekananda in 1899 at Mayavati in the lap of the Himalayas. There are four heritage buildings there. These are the Main Building,
where Swami Vivekananda had stayed for 15 days in 1901, the Captain’s Cottage, the
Mother’s Cottage, and the Prabuddha Bharata building. Out of these four structures,
the Main Building is the oldest. All the buildings are more than a hundred years old.
As we see, these buildings have faced the ravages of time and have stood
through the tough weather conditions of the Himalayas for more than a century
now. Some of the portions of these structures were damaged or degenerated and
needed urgent attention.
Thus in 2016 began the plan to restore and conserve these prestigious structures. The execution of the plan took off in 2018. Most revered President Maharaj, Srimat Swami Smarananandaji then laid the foundation stone for the restoration work in March 2018. Now, after 4 years of hard work, the restoration of the Main Building as well as the Prabuddha Bharata Building has been completed by the grace of the Divine as well as the blessings and good wishes of all our senior monks and lay members. In and through this restoration and conservation work, we have tried as
much as possible to take these buildings back to their original form as they existed
when Swami Vivekananda visited Mayavati in 1901.
As stated before, Swamiji stayed in the Main Building for 15 days in 1901.
The first 6 days of his stay he spent in the first-floor room from where the Himalayan
peaks are clearly visible. This room now has been converted into a meditation hall for
monks. For the remaining 9 days, Swamiji stayed in the ground-floor room where there is
a fireplace. This room, which was popularly known as Gol Kamra, has been
transformed into a meditation hall meant for visitors and lay devotees. On the
ground floor of the Main Building, the room which had been used as the monastic
dining hall and storeroom has been converted into an exhibition hall. In this
exhibition is depicted the history of the Mayavati Ashrama on large panels. The
original press which was used to print the first editions of “The Complete Works of
Swami Vivekananda” as well as “The Life of Swami Vivekananda” has been brought
back to its original place.
In the Prabuddha Bharata Building, we now have a new Vedanta Book Store, an Audio-Visual
room, as well as a reading room.
These two heritage structures were inaugurated in an offline programme on 20 March 2022. Later, on 27 March there was an online programme. Please see the following link:
