In this installment in the Heritage series I talk about my connection with the red ripper pea and a man who gave me the seed. Mr. Lewis Jackson a veteran of World War 2 had a huge impact on my life. He also taught me a few tricks in the garden. He shared a cow pea with me. The Red ripper has been a staple in Southern gardens since before the Civil war. His family has been growing this pea and saving seed for many many years. I have not planted this pea in 14 years so trying to germinate this seed will be difficult. I am hoping to get a couple of plants this season just to reset the seed stock for a variety of cow pea that has been adapted to not only the region I grow in, but the very location in which I live.
