Strunkede Castle was built by the Lords of Strunkede, who are mentioned as early as 1142. The castle complex was equipped with towers and water-filled moats - ditches. Some of these moats and a large castle pond are still preserved in the castle park. Jobst von Strunkede initiated the transformation into a majestic castle palace complex in 1591. The representative character of Strunkede Castle was emphasised by the castle garden, which was designed in the French Baroque style.
In its present form as a chateau with two wings, the complex appeared from the middle of the 19th century. At that time the property was no longer owned by the von Strunkede family, the main line of which died out in 1742 with the death of Johann Conrad von Strunkede. Several offshoots followed the castles until Strunkede Castle passed to the von Forell family by marriage in 1810. In 1896, they sold the castle, which had been badly damaged by mountain subsidence, to Harpener Mining AG and moved into a newly built villa in the castle park, in today's municipal gallery. In 1900, the Forell family left Herne. She is remembered by the Forellstrasse near the castle. Her family grave, marked by an obelisk, is in the castle park.
In the following years, the old aristocratic residence was used in various ways. It served as a restaurant, a military hospital, a police headquarters, etc. The castle has belonged to the town of Hearn since 1944 and has been restored several times since then. In 1948, the castle housed the collections of the Emschertal Museum. Today, the moated castle in the north of Hern is the largest home of the Emschertal Museum. Numerous exhibits here document the history of today's area of Herne, from the Neanderthal era to the Carolingian period to the industrial city. The history of the castle and the von Strunkede family is also covered.
The castle chapel directly opposite Strunkede Castle was built in 1272 by Bernd von Strunkede in the Gothic style. It is the oldest building in the urban area of Herne and served as a place of worship for the castle's inhabitants. Traces of the original sacred building can still be found in the choir of the chapel. The chapel acquired its current appearance in the 14th and 15th centuries. Inside, they include a ribbed vault, the remains of medieval wall paintings and a late Gothic entrance on the south side.
The chapel contains the tomb of Jobst von Strunkede, nicknamed 'the great Jobst', and his father Reynard, who found his final resting place before the altar in 1529 and 1535, as well as the tombstone of Margaretha von Asbeck, wife of the 'great' Jobst. As a result of the Reformation in 1561, the originally Catholic Church became Protestant. In the 1970s the chapel was taken over by the city and has since undergone several major restorations.
