The Herzogstand is one of the best-known and most popular hiking destinations in the Munich area and is one of the Munich residents' "local mountains". In summer, the mountain to the northwest of the Walchensee is also very popular with walkers thanks to the Herzogstandbahn and Herzogstandhaus.
Hike: Herzogstandbahn mountain station - Herzogstandhaus - Herzogstand summit and back.
This tour leads to the Herzogstand up to the summit at 1730 meters. The large Herzogstandhaus with a sun terrace offers a beautiful view over the Walchensee and the journey over the serpentines from the Kochelsee to the Walchensee awakens alpine feelings.
Up from the Walchensee at a height of 800 meters, the cable car takes you up to around 1600 meters. Then on a wide, but steeply downhill path at about the same height over to the Herzogstandhaus. On the valley side it is partly steep downhill, you should always watch out for small children even in the areas secured by railings.
The view of both the Alpine chain and the Walchensee is excellent. After a few minutes you have reached the Herzogstandhaus with its sun terrace. From here the path continues, initially gently uphill, then ascending in many serpentines to the summit of the Herzogstand with the wooden pavilion.
The way is rather unproblematic. But since it is only surrounded by bushes, it is exposed to the sun on the whole, not particularly long, stretch, so that it becomes difficult on hot days. The summit itself with the large summit cross is rocky and offers a great view of the nearby Benediktenwand, the Heimgarten, the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains as well as far into the Tyrolean Alps. The way back is on the way there.
From the mountain station to the Herzogstandhaus you can expect about 15 minutes to walk. From there to the summit about 30-45 minutes. Then it goes down a little faster. From the house again in 15 minutes to the gondola.
