Great retrospective on Hexen. It can't be understated how jaw dropping it was back in the day to experience all of the technical witchery and level design Raven was able to pull off with this engine. The whole game just oozes atmosphere. The bridge at the start of Dark Crucible will forever be memorable. Hope you eventually cover Hexen II!

Hexen kicked my dumb 9-year-old ass and I never got past the second hub. Recently I liked Hedon Bloodrite so much I went back to replay the classics that inspired it, and finally beat both Hexen and the expansion. It's definitely my favorite 90s single player shooter now. Wait, the Wraithverge is 18 of both blue and green mana. You miscounted.

It's a real shame that the labyrinthian style maps where such a hurtle for players, cause hot dam does Hexen do so many things that were thought of impossible for the time. I can't stress enough that for 1995 we had an FPS with proper melee and Range combat that pulled of what is essentially a metroidvania style of play on the Doom engine. Icing on the cake one year later we'd get Quake. Let that sink in. The devs were way ahead of the time.
@ShadesMan
11 ай бұрын
Custom mapping also helps! Sure we know it now, but if the levels were either linear and no more labrynthe than doom or heretic - or cross-level progression was a tad more obvious - that would have helped. The game does communicate stuff to us as u say... but that one grey leiver behind a gret statue in a grey cave... ya know! Even Civvie practically waved his finger at that part and said "c'mon you, yoooou." I remember WAY back in 7 portals demo hearing about 1/3 of the puzzle and thinking 'what puzzle' not even knowing its just a switch hunt.
21 күн бұрын
I liked the labyrinthian style of maps, that is probably the best and most unique about hexen overall - the sense of adventure and exploration that they bring as they actually require the player to think and memorise the map rather than being yet another braindead run from point a to point b to linear corridor just to grab card just to run back all the way back to same corridor or just mindless ssg strafing brainrot. The melee combat is nothing special especially for 1995, it's mediocre as very basic because same kind of result you can get from doom 1 punching pinkies and revenants with berserk power up, the piercing mage rail and lightning that could stick to enemies was far more impressive, and the moving platforms.

Same experience, but though I wasn't coming at it after Doom - I was coming at it after Warframe. Now Warframe has its own ways of rewarding exploration and some pretty convoluted (if typically optional) puzzles, but even next to that Hexen was on a whole nother planet of difficulty.

As someone who as there when this game came out: the jump button didn't feel like a revolution, but more like "wow fucking finally", because Doom already had lots of places where you could use a jump (and which got broken when people used it on source ports). It was such an obvious addition that the fact Doom didn't have it was actually kinda baffling.

Sidenote on the "technical revolution" ... should have called out the JEDI engine used by Dark Forces. It's quite different under the hood because it predates Hexen (came out slightly after Doom), but it delivered quite similar results and even exceeded the Doom engine with its room-over-room layouts. Not unlike the later Build engine it often gets compared to. That engine really blew my mind when I was a kid and it didn't sacrifice performance to do it. If memory serves Lucasarts used to same engine or a different iteration thereof for Outlaws.
@YeenMage

The Mage's Frost Shards are actually not as efficient as you describe them. The Frost Shards cost 3 Blue Mana - the highest of all three. You need to use its melee version to get the maximum damage which is cool but the Mage by nature should always focus on range assaults. And if you fire at medium range just a few steps away from a melee attack, not all the ice shards will spawn, lowering your total damage output drastically.

It's hard to find something even closer in gameplay mechanics, level design and atmosphere Raven pull off with this series. It is so good! I beated this games more times than I did with Doom, Hexen's level progression feels more rewarding and the atmosphere really makes you inmersive because it feels that the world is alive and changing with the enviroment shifting with the puzzles, just like with the Build engine games. I totally recommend replaying Hexen with Wrath of Cronos (an RPG focused mod) and with Tempered's Arms (a Vanilla+ mod)

This review did not disappoint! Somehow this got skipped over my notification feed and it wasn't until marathon 2 that I got one of your vids in my feed again. This may sound insane but since I played it a billion times as a kid I find Hexen on the easy side as far as these fps games are concerned. Or at least, the best way I can put it is it's the most FAIR to the player. There's stupid death traps, sure, but most are fairly telegraphed to the observant player. And there's no hitscan enemies. That's probably the big thing that edges this to being "fair" over anything else: NO HITSCANNING! I guess heretic didn't have any either, but that game is extreme on black plague mode and there's no wraithverge (not even a proper BFG clone). Any chance you might do wizard's vaults or caldera? or even... STARGATE?

Sigh ... Hexen ... it still brings a tear to my eye each time I remember what Activision did to Raven Soft ... damn Call of squitters ... I can´t even begin to explain how bloody awesome it felt booting up Hexen for the first time nack then. I could barely grasp what Raven managed to pull off in the Doom Engine. Atmosphere and the way the game played and "felt" always reminded me more of a pen and paper session than a fps. Such a shame that even the newer boomer shooter apparently won´t manage to induce the same feeling ... well ... except "Graven" perhaps - biiiig recommendation for that one ... if they manage to get it out of early access, that is.

I was always more into the classical eg; gun based fps; Wolf, ROTT, Blood, Duke, Doom, even the more obscure stuff like Powerslave, the (criminally underrated) Killing Time and early adventure-fps Realms of the Haunting. I love dark gothic stuff but I'm _not_ a fantasy fan... So I skipped past Heretic and Hexen completely back in the day. I even tried modern source ports recently, but the ridiculous and obtuse key/switch insanity killed the tenuous interest I had and made me quit in frustration. All that said, I can appreciate that Hexen's well made and technically impressive, and I do love the OST and atmosphere. It's just the fantasy "skin" it wears combined with certain gameplay elements that simply aren't for me. I'm enjoying your retrospectives though! I have immense nostalgia for this era: what I consider the Golden Age of PC gaming c1993-2003 (and just far better times in general) and I can nerd out on this content for hours even if I don't much care for the game in question.
