Hello everybody Greg Austin with A Better Official.
One of the basics: Team Control.
When does it start? When does it end? That's what we'll be covering next
on five minutes on officiating. Stick around.
Here we are at the start of a boys varsity high school game. Very normal activity.
Here on the opening tip there is no Team Control.
The ball is tapped and goes in the backcourt.
This player controls the ball and now we have Team Control for Black.
You still have Team Control; the basics.
Once the player releases the ball for a try we have no Team Control.
Neither team has Team Control.
White grabs the rebound Team Control is theirs.
Again, during a try no Team Control
While the ball is dead after going through the made basket before
Black has as the ball at their disposal there is no Team Control.
Once the ball is at their disposal we have Team Control. On a throw-in the Team Control
is only for the enforcement of fouls if this black player pushed this white
player on the trip up the court during the throw-in,
It would be a Team Control foul
while the ball is in the air being passed between teammates:
Team Control does not change.
Rebounding action. Batted in the air:
no Team Control until a team grabs...
and is holding or dribbling the ball
so try is in-flight no Team Control
rebounding action. Batted. Batted. Batted.
No Team Control until the ball is held controlled by black now we have
Team Control by Black.
player travels we're going the other way
let's take a look at a couple of interesting plays
Black has Team Control: passing the ball.
A pass is made to the wing -- deflected by the defender.
important recognize this is still a Team Control situation
The Black player uses his backside.
He displaces the White player
and it's correctly called a Team Control foul
if it was a bonus situation,
which it appears that it is in this game
There are no resulting free-throws because
it was a Team Control foul
Black is in Team Control.
The ball gets loose. Team control does not change.
White 20 is fouled by a player who is stripped of the ball
before white gained Team Control, so this is a Team Control foul the crew in this situation didn't recognize that fact and awarded bonus free throws to white 20.
This scenario is not all that uncommon. We need to be aware of it as a crew.
The ball gets stripped. the ball gets deflected -- possible steal.
The player who lost the ball reaches out and fouls.
we need to make a determination as a crew
whether the defensive player now offensive
player has controlled the ball before the foul occurs.
really key that as a
crew we get that play right.
That wraps up another edition of
five minutes on officiating.
