Scrambling up Heyden Brook that runs north of the Woodhead Reservoir. Summary verdict: a single, challenging Grade 1.5 / Grade 2 waterfall and swim pool half-way up and lots of cascades to clamber up
• Route in: park at first semi-circular car park on left side of A6024 Woodhead Road as you drive north at SE 09902 02179; follow path west that goes to waterfall and keep going down the clough (alternative is small layby on left around SE 09457 00464 and join brook lower down than indicated start point)
• Start point: enter Heyden Brook just at the north edge of the wood around SE 09747 01340
• Grading: there is a single main waterfall - around 15 feet high and tricky, so grade 1.5 or maybe grade 2 - with a nice swim pool. Otherwise just a set of grade 0.5 cascades interspersed with flatter sections that can be walked past
• End point: I chose to get out at Stable Clough around SE 09554 02626
• Route out: there was no path so I followed the fence line on the right side of Stable Clough to the road; it would then be safer to walk along the fence line by the road but it’s quicker to just walk along the road
• Time: c.35 mins from CP to start point; then 2-2.5 hours up Heyden Brook; then about 30 mins to walk back to the CP
• Combine with: the upper half of Heyden Brook (but not sure if that’s worth doing)
• Gear: wet scramble gear including buoyancy vest (some pools are out of depth and I fell into the main waterfall pool a couple of times trying to ascend); through an excess of caution, I did pop on a climbing helmet for the main waterfall
• Verdict: the main waterfall was a great climb (and would also be fun to descend); the cascades were OK but likely only enjoyable after rains when the brook is quite full
