Nice to see a big old Foden all the way from sunny 1986 still in business! Whatever those lads were paid for that recovery, they earned it!

When i decided to buy a truck for container delivery, i wanted a Scania. But then i noticed that Fodens always did the shit work. Salting the roads in atrocious weather, heavy hauling other trucks out of ditches etc. so i bought one , a bit agricultural to drive, and likes its fuel. But never let me down. And in six years of ownership always got the job done.

Great trucks. As a kid I grew up around a fleet of Daf 2800's but always liked when I saw a Foden S out and about. Now i'm older and appreciate the different engines Cat, Cumnins etc I wish I was back in the 80's now to hear them more. There's a couple of Cummins and Cat engined ERF's and Foden's where I live in West Cornwall, think there's a Strato in Penzance too but not quite the abundance that it once was. You're a lucky chap to have a Foden as your daily drive would be great to see/hear it in action.

I loved my Foden , got it brand new in 1994 on an M registration. Cummins 325 with a 13 speed RTO fuller box and Rockwell axle , totally bullet proof and went like a train and never broke down once ! Only gripe I had was the cable change. You couldn’t lubricate it and it became a bit heavy moving sideways across the H pattern . Replacement cables was the only option.

You wouldn't use the Foden for tank recy. The winch is rated at 25 tonne, snatched to 50 tonne. The Challenger Recy tank winch is 50 tonne, snatched to 100 tonne. An out of control tank would over whelm the Foden.

@@simonosborne3047 Why did they have to take the driveshaft out? Because the engine is locked up and the transmission is stuck in gear? Or is it a standard lorry-towing thing?

@xxwookey HGVs these days are all automatic and yes, it would have been in gear. However I lost a prop shaft about 15 years ago & the recovery took the drive shaft out of that even though it was manual, to save the diff I guess.
@fenpikey
Ай бұрын
@@simonosborne3047 Think you'll find that the gearboxes in heavies are automated manual boxes rather than an automatic box. Prop or drive shafts are removed to protect the gear box, not the diff when front lifted. It's to do with how the gearbox is lubricated when moving.
