If their is one song that could be called the slack key anthem, it might well be "Hi`ilawe," composed by Sam Li`a of Waipio Valley on the Island of Hawai`i. Gabby Pahinui's landmark first slack key recording was a version of this song and it has become the template for most of today's artists. Ledward borrows some details from Gabby, but adds his own flavor including his pure falsetto vocalization. I couldn't resist leaving in some of the "funny stuff" - the spontaneous and natural comments and observations that are always part of Ledward's shows.
Ledward is using the "drop C" tuning, spelled C G D G B D from low to high. When he capos to the 2nd fret he moves the key from C to D.
The John G. Shedd Institute for the Arts is devoted to bringing live music to the citizens of Eugene and the surrounding area both in the form of performances by notable artists and through their community music school program. This video is from Ledward's performance there on June 2, 2012.
The video was captured on a Panasonic Lumix GH2, with audio recorded on a Sony PCM-D50 connected to the mixing console. Editing was done in Edius Neo.
