As a child in the flatwoods of Tennessee Ive watched my grandfather weave hickory bark chair seats he also used cane. Thanks for sharing I'm enjoying many memories. This would've been about 65 years ago, thanks again sir.

I can't imagine how anyone could look at this chair seat and not love the variegated color of the bark and the weave. So many people look for uniform perfection of color and shape not realizing that nature doesn't work that way. Thank you sir for this lesson.

Grandpa Jude's homestead had only that type of " hickory cane" chairs in the old farmhouse until the seventies then kitchen chairs were fomaica table set and steel chairs. He did get a rocker pair and setie double rocker in the late 60s . Yes they are great chairs.

That chair is just gorgeous! It is so light yet must be amazingly strong being oak and hickory. I love the style and the curves in the back looks so comfortable and with the ray fleck from the oak what a master piece. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us..It is a great asset I assure you!

Thank you Peter. I wondered if you ever put any finish on the seat (like linseed oil) after it has darkened and developed it’s finished patina and gotten “shiny” from use? I did a seat with elm bark on a rocker I made this spring. Hopefully it holds up alright. I have heard it works ok. I had a problem with mold after the seat was on, but a spray bottle with vinegar seemed to take care of it. The vinegar smell went away before too long. Thanks again, your videos are very helpful and well done!

I realise thise is a little old, but would it help if you had split it fromthe other end? Kind of like splitting firewood, from the bottom up?

I wonder if a card scraper would be better to use than a spoke shave 🤔

One way to find out. In the case of these strips I was shaving, it'd be a lot of scraping.

Which kind of hickory did the bark come from?

I'd guess mockernut. Don't believe he mentions it. I just got some as firewood.
